BERRY JUST TWO SHY OF 4,000 WINS, SERA’S TUNNEL WINS TURF FEATURE
OKLAHOMA CITY – Cliff Berry, the all-time leading jockey at Remington Park, picked up a riding double on the Thursday program to move within two of his next milestone. Berry is on the cusp of capturing his 4,000th career Thoroughbred victory and will become racing’s 65th jockey to reach the mark.
Berry had a mount in all nine races on the Thursday night and started the evening by taking the opener aboard Katillac Charm ($6.20 to win). He scored in the fourth race with Dakamo Denia ($7.60). The pair of wins puts Berry at 3,998 thoroughbred triumphs heading into Friday night racing.
Berry, a Jones, Okla. resident, has been named to ride five times on Friday night and five times on Saturday night. He currently leads the Remington Park seasonal jockey standings with 42 wins, four ahead of Luis Quinonez. Berry is attempting to win his 15th Pat Steinberg Award at Remington Park as the seasonal riding champ during the Thoroughbred meeting.
Sera’s Tunnel won the $31,500 allowance feature for fillies and mares going 1-1/16 miles over the Remington Park turf course. Owned by David Moad of Burleson, Texas and trained by Karl Broberg, Sera’s Tunnel was ridden by Glen Murphy. The 5-year-old mare tracked the pace-setting Lady Jordan throughout the race until the field of seven reached the stretch when she made her move to win by a length in 1:43.55. Lady Jordan held second with Grand Entry rallying for third.
Sera’s Tunnel was 18-1 in the wagering and paid $38.40 to win, $11.80 to place and $4.60 to show. Lady Jordan, the beaten even-money favorite, paid $3 to place and $2.60 to show. Grand Entry returned $3.40 to show.
The win was the seventh from 47 career starts for Sera’s Tunnel, a Texas-bred daughter of Sand Tunnel from the Cat Creek Slew mare Sera Slew. She won her Remington Park debut and picked up $18,798 for the effort to move her overall earnings to $114,037.
The 2012 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Friday and Saturday with the first race at 6:30pm both evenings. The 2-year-old fillies are in the stakes spotlight on Friday night with the running of the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes.
