SPEEDY TOMAHAWK CREEK PREVAILS FOR FIRST TURF SCORE
OKLAHOMA CITY – Leaving the starting gate with plenty of determination, Tomahawk Creek took the lead immediately in Thursday’s $29,500 optional allowance feature at Remington Park. The 7-year-old led throughout the five furlongs over the turf, crossing the finish 1-1/2 lengths ahead of Wholelotatricks who had a two-race winning streak end.
Owned by Blanca Cuevas of Oklahoma City and trained by Steve Davis, Tomahawk Creek was ridden by Benny Landeros. The Kentucky-bred gelding used his speed to take control and repel a brief threat in the turn before pulling away to a clear advantage in the stretch. Wholelotatricks made up ground in second but could not get to the winner who handled five furlongs over the firm going in :57.35 seconds.
Pacific Tsunami was three-quarters of a length behind the runner-up in third while Salt Flat Speed faded to fourth after attempting an early challenge to Tomahawk Creek.
Dismissed at 15-1 odds, Tomahawk Creek paid $32 to win, $13 to place and $7.40 to show. Wholelotatricks returned $4.60 to place and $2.40 to show. Pacific Tsunami, the wagering favorite at 9-5 odds, paid $2.60 to show.
The exacta (Nos. 1-6) paid $154.20 with the trifecta (1-6-3) paying $305.40. The superfecta (1-6-3-4) returned $3,139.20.
A gelded son of Twining from the Lord At War (Arg) mare Miss the War, Tomahawk Creek won his fifth career race from 23 starts. It was his second win at Remington Park, joining a victory on the main track here on the Opening Night of this season, Aug. 19. Tomahawk Creek earned $17,475 for his effort to boost his overall earnings to $73,961.
Remington Park will now card 11 races per program for the remainder of the season. Due to the elongated action, the first race will move to 5:30pm every night thru the conclusion of the season, beginning on Friday night.
Special afternoon racing takes place on Black Friday, Nov. 26, beginning at 1:30pm. All times are central.
The Remington Park season ends on Dec. 11, featuring the finale of the 2-year-old stakes series, the $250,000 Springboard Mile.
