PISTOLS DRAWN READY TO TAKE ANOTHER SHOT AT ARLINGTON
Asiel Stable’s Pistols Drawn worked five furlongs on Saturday morning for trainer Carlos Silva in what was her final major work before next Saturday’s $100,000 Purple Violet Stakes. Winner of the $100,000 Pretty Jenny Stakes on April 26 at Hawthorne Race Course, the daughter of First Defence will be looking for her first victory in three Arlington International Racecourse attempts in the one-mile event.
“She worked really well this morning, ” Silva reported. “She did what we wanted her to do. Nothing too fast – she did five furlongs in 1:03 and she galloped out very good. The plan is the Purple Violet and I think she is ready.”
Last year, Pistols Drawn raced twice at the Chicagoland oval to commence her career – finishing up the track in two maiden special weight contests. “She was a little green last year when she was here. After some time off, she came back and ran big for me in November.”
Following a few weeks off, the bay maternal granddaughter of Belong to Me broke her maiden by 17 lengths in her first attempt at two turns – and also with blinkers – at Hawthorne. Next out, on a mere 14-day rest, the April foal ran a pace-setting fourth in the $100,000 Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante to close her juvenile year.
“This year she has been a better horse and been much more mature,” Silva said. “She’s been really happy and seems like a different horse.” The Illinois-bred filly finished second in her seasonal debut – a five-furlong dash at Hawthorne – before a two-turn allowance romp and a 6 ¼-length win in the Pretty Jenny last out. “I hope she runs a big race. She’s such a nice filly.”
Another nice filly in the Silva barn is Diva’s Diamond, who laid down a four-furlong move in :49.40 for the same connections. The 5-year-old two-time stakes winner – including a win in the $100,000 Peach of It Handicap at Hawthorne April 26 – has won two in a row. “She’s doing really well and I am going to try to run her on the grass next week if the race goes,” Silva reported. “She’s been really good to me. Hopefully we will see her soon. She is working very well and is such a nice filly.”
REGALLY BRED ALADEEM POSTS BULLET IN FIRST CAREER WORK
Well bred Aladeem turned a few heads Saturday morning at Arlington International Racecourse with his first career timed work in a solid :24.40 in company for trainer Danny Peitz and owner Shadwell Stable. The juvenile son of Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry – a sire of 15 Grade I winners including Zenyatta and Street Sense – is out of English champion 3-year-old Mehtaaf, winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas and a daughter of the great Nureyev. Aladeem, a March foal, worked in tandem with stablemate Basboosa, with both striding out well after the wire. None of the seven other workers at the distance came within a second of the Shadwell team’s time.
Speaking of quick and talented, reigning Illinois Horse of the Year Work All Week also put in another stellar showing Saturday morning, working five panels in :59.80 for owner Midwest Thoroughbreds and trainer Roger Brueggemann. The son of City Zip shared the bullet designation with fellow stakes-winning Illinois-bred sprinter Algonquin Posse. William Stiritz’ homebred daughter of Posse is working toward her 2014 debut, which could possibly come in the Isaac Murphy Handicap on June 14 – a race in which she finished second last year for trainer Scott Becker.
