sum of the parts heads fg’s colonel Power stakes

NEW ORLEANS (Wednesday, March 12, 2014) – Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence’s Sum of the Parts, coming off two straight grass dash stakes wins in his last two starts, should rule the choice when he faces seven other grass-favoring sprinters in Saturday’s featured $60,000 Colonel Power Stakes, scheduled at about 5 ½-furlongs over the Stall-Wilson turf course at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
In his most recent trip to the post, the Tom Amoss trainee captured the $75,000 Champion Energy Services Stakes at Sam Houston by three-quarters of a length on Jan. 25 and before that took down winning honors in Fair Grounds’ $75,000 Bonapaw Stakes by 2 ¾-lengths on Dec. 21. Three-time Fair Grounds defending jockey champion Rosie Napravnik, astride for both of those scores, will be in the irons once again this weekend.
Although Sum of the Parts disappointed in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Sprint on the main track at Santa Anita last Nov. 2 in California he won the Grade III Phoenix Stakes over the Polytrack at Keeneland a month earlier.
Dennis Narlinger’s Artest may be the main challenger in the Colonel Power. The 5-year-old Hard Spun gelding ran a close second to Sum of the Parts in the Champion Energy Services and fourth behind that same rival in the Bonapaw here. Trained by Al Stall Jr, Artest will be ridden by Miguel Mena.
Brittlyn Stable’s Gantry, who swept Fair Grounds’ three-race sprint series on the main track two seasons ago, merits some consideration here, especially if the sprint is taken off the turf and run on the main track. Ron Faucheux trains and regular rider Richard Eramia returns in the irons.
One particularly interesting challenger in the Colonel Power is End Zone Athletics’ supplemented entry Joe Hollywood, who won an allowance and $40,000 optional claiming grass sprint here last Sunday and another on the local main track during the Mardi Gras holiday. Chris Landeros will ride the horse claimed by Karl Broberg during Mardi Gras who will be making his third start in less than two weeks.
Completing the field is Hugh Robertson’s Bet Seattle, James Graham; Team Forster 131’s Positive Side, Leandro Goncalves; Martin Racing’s Marchman, Robby Albarado; and Loooch Racing’s Expecting Cash, Brian Hernandez Jr.
