RACING LEGEND JOHN NERUD DONATES $50,000 TO ANNA HOUSE

ELMONT, N.Y. – Legendary horseman and Hall of Famer John Nerud, who recently turned 98, today presented a check for $50,000 to the Belmont Child Care Association at its backstretch child-care center, Anna House.

“I have more money than days left, so it makes me happy to give to such a worthy cause,” said Nerud, who trained more than 1,000 winners and who was enshrined in racing’s Hall of Fame in 1972.

Since it opened at Belmont Park in 2003, Nerud has been a frequent visitor to Anna House, the day-care center which was created to meet the unique needs of working families at Belmont Park. Nerud, who began his racetrack career in the 1930’s and went on to train 1968’s Horse of the Year Dr. Fager, said he started working as a stable hand for $1 a day, and was proud to be able to give back to the children of those who are working as he did many years ago.

“This wonderful place should be visited by everyone in our industry to see what can be done by a group of dedicated people,” said Nerud of the BCCA, a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to raise the financial resources necessary to maintain Anna House for the benefit of working families at Belmont Park.
