WIDE-OPEN TURF SPRINT STAKES FEATURES TOP OKLAHOMA-BRED SPEEDSTERS

OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park’s final stakes offering for the month of September is a dandy for horseplayers as a highly competitive field of 10 goes to the post Saturday night in the $50,000 Remington Park Turf Sprint.

Restricted to accredited Oklahoma-breds, the Turf Sprint is at five furlongs over the grass and could be won by virtually any of the contestants according to Remington Park odds-maker Jerry Shottenkirk. He had to make the tough decision on who would be favored with the honor going to Flatland Fever, a winner at five furlongs over turf in claiming company here earlier this month.

“This is anyone's ballgame. It's unbelievably even from top to bottom,” Shottenkirk said. “There aren't many stakes races that end up with a 4-1 morning line favorite. Despite a step up in class, Flatland Fever is exceptional at five furlongs on the turf and probably rates an edge, lukewarm as it may be.”

Flatland Fever is now owned by Ernest Dixon of Alva, Okla., who claimed the 5-year-old gelding out of his win on Sept. 1 against $15,000-level claimers. Now trained by Joe Merrick of Sayre, Okla., jockey Quincy Hamilton will keep the assignment on Flatland Fever after emerging victorious in their most recent attempt together.

The complete field for the Remington Park Turf Sprint by post position and program number, with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds, is:
1. Flatland Fever, Joe Merrick, Quincy Hamilton, 4-1
2. Miranda Diane, Shane Seaton, Nena Matz, 12-1
3. Sir Mightas, Tim Padilla, Bobby Walker, Jr., 12-1
4. Steal Your Face, Aaron Box, Aaron Gryder, 5-1
5. Laidbacklynny, Kenny Nolen, Belen Quinonez, 8-1
6. Ti Township, Allen Milligan, Shane Laviolette, 6-1
7. Antioch Diamond, Aaron Box, Ramsey Zimmerman, 6-1
8. Herecomesthemannow, Jody Pruitt, Curtis Kimes, 8-1
9. Conkigo, Martin Lozano, Floyd Wethey, Jr., 8-1
10. Fifth Date, Larry Brown, Alex Birzer, 6-1

The Turf Sprint will be the ninth race of nine on Saturday evening with an approximate post time of 10:14pm. The first race of the night will be dispatched from the starting gate at 6:30pm.

The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season is normally conducted on a Wednesday thru Saturday weekly basis at 6:30pm.

The 22nd Oklahoma Derby will be contested on Sunday, Oct. 10, the only Sunday afternoon racing program of the season, at 1:30pm.
