THE ‘CAT MAN’ TIETH – TWO CHANCES TO BREAK OWN RECORD SUNDAY

 

           

            Trainer Wayne Catalano – already easily established as Arlington Park’s conditioner of the decade – added another feather to his cap Friday when he equaled his own record of 74 wins by a trainer at an Arlington meet that he set three years ago.

 

            Talons Racing’s Loves to Fly won Friday’s fourth race by five lengths for Catalano to equal that mark.  Fittingly, Loves to Fly was ridden by jockey Shane Sellers, who set Arlington’s all-time leading jockey mark of 219 wins at an Arlington meet during the 1991 session.

 

            “I’m very happy we were able to tie that record,” said Catalano during training hours Saturday morning.  “We’ve had a good meet.  The horses all ran well and that’s the most important thing.”

 

            Although Catalano has no horses entered Saturday, the penultimate day of Arlington’s 2010 session, the 54-year-old New Orleans native has Greg Besinger’s Summer Upcountry in Sunday’s fourth race and Gary and Mary West’s appropriately-named Sacred Ground in the sixth event on that closing day program.

 

            “Maybe we set the bar too high last time,” said Catalano with a Cheshire-like grin when asked if he thought he could break his own record.  “I suppose we’ve got a shot.  I guess they’re both fairly live horses, but I haven’t had a chance to handicap the other horses in those races.”

 

            Summer Upcountry is the 4-1 second choice in the morning line for Sunday’s fourth race and Sacred Ground has been pegged at 8-1 in the sixth.

 

            Catalano will be earning his sixth straight local title this summer as well as his ninth in the last 11 years.  On August 8 this summer, Catalano tied the late Jere Smith Sr. for the second spot on Arlington’s all-time leading trainer list and on the next racing day that week took over sole possession of that place in Arlington history.

JOCKEY CASTANON RIDES 1,997 TH ‘T-BRED’-CAREER WINNER FRIDAY

            Veteran reinsman Jesus Castanon guided Charles Patton’s Inside Deal to a front-running victory by a head in Friday’s sixth race to register his 1,997th Thoroughbred career win.

 

            The 37-year-old native of Panama City, Panama, riding a complete season at Arlington for the first time this summer, is listed to ride six horses Saturday – many of them “live” according to the morning line odds for Saturday.

 

            Castanon is also slated for mounts in all nine races of Sunday’s final day of Arlington’s 2010 racing season in pursuit of the 2,000-win milestone while still at Chicago’s premier Thoroughbred oval.

 

            Following Friday’s third race, Castanon was presented with Arlington’s Jockey of the Month Award for September, for riding 13 winners from 64 starts for the month through last Sunday’s program.

 

            Trainer of the Month for September for the same time period was Larry Rivelli, who had eight wins from only 20 starts.

 

            Rivelli, currently third in Arlington’s 2010 trainer standings, also posted a 65 per cent in-the-money ratio in September through last Sunday’s races.

 

            Owner of the Month for September was Edward Cox Jr. who had two wins from three starts during that same time period.

 

            Frank Calabrese, undisputed Owner of the Decade at Arlington, posted on owner triple on Friday, two of which gave conditioner Ron Faucheux a training double for Friday.

 

            Also on Friday, veteran Arlington Park jockey Eddie Perez passed Hall of Fame rider Bill Shoemaker on Arlington’s all-time leading jockey list with his win aboard Darrell and Sadie Brommer and Team Block’s Gamblers Reward, trained by Chris Block, in the second race.

 

FAN APPRECIATION DAY SUNDAY AT ARLINGTON PARK

            As a way to say “Thank You” to its loyal guests, Arlington Park will have a “Fan Appreciation Day” on Sunday’s closing day program of its 91-day 2010 session.

 

            There will be free General Admission for all attendees, and those guests who previously purchased a single-day stand alone general admission ticket or a single-day reserved seat with general admission package for Sept. 26 will receive a $6 wagering voucher upon presentation of their pre-paid ticket at the redemption booths.  In addition there will be reduced prices on reserved seats.

 

            Also, Sunday evening at 8 o’clock Central time, HRTV will air a program on Arlington’s Miracle Million for its “Inside Information” series.
