BELMONT PARK NOTES

  • Devil May Care exits Mother Goose in good order; busy morning for rest of the ‘Todd Squad’
  • Proviso, Unrivaled Belle return to work tab
  • Trappe Shot, Redding Colliery breeze

ELMONT, N.Y.Devil May Care had a good morning following her victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Mother Goose, trainer Todd Pletcher reported.

“She came out of the race in excellent shape,” said Pletcher, who has the Grade 1 Betfair TVG Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, July 24, scheduled for her next start, to be followed by the Grade 1 Betfair TVG Alabama on Saturday, August 21.

The daughter of Malibu Moon extended her record to four victories from seven starts in the Mother Goose, with both Grade 1 wins coming at Belmont Park, the other being last October’s Frizette.

Pletcher, who turned 43 Saturday, celebrated his birthday at home after the races and had a typically busy Sunday morning. Among the “Todd Squad” members working were Quality Road, who went a half-mile in 50.76, galloping out in 1:03.20, as he prepares for his next start in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga Race Course on August 7.

“He went well,” said the trainer.

Also working were Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver  [5F, 1:01.82], Le Grand Cru [4F, 48.44], Take the Points [4F, inner turf, 47.15], and Munnings and Hunters Bay, who went five furlongs together in 1:00.09, galloping out in  1:12.10.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott sent out Proviso for a half-mile breeze in 47.12 this morning, her first work since winning the Grade 1 Just a Game on Belmont Stakes Day, Saturday, June 5.

“She looks good and has been doing fine,” reported Mott. “So far, so good. If all goes well, she’ll make her next start in the [Grade 1] Diana [July 31 at Saratoga].”

Also on Mott’s work tab were Hold Me Back, who went five furlongs in 1:00.64, and Unrivaled Belle, who breezed a half-mile in 48.62.

“It was her first work since [her second-place finish in] the Ogden Phipps, and she went well enough,” said Mott.

Jockey Alan Garcia was aboard Trappe Shot Sunday morning as he worked in company with Redding Colliery, both going a half-mile in 47.46.

“Alan was very happy with him,” reported Kiaran McLaughlin’s assistant, Artie Magnuson. “It’s the first time they’ve worked together, but they’re both on a weekend schedule, and they went great.”

Trappe Shot will prep out of town for his next major New York objective as McLaughlin decides whether he will go in the 141st running of the Grade 1, 1¼ mile Travers at Saratoga Race course on August 28 or the Grade 1, seven-furlong King’s Bishop the same day.

McLaughlin said Redding Colliery remains under consideration for Saturday’s Grade 2 Suburban, but will most likely skip the race.

“He had a tough trip to Texas,” he said of the Lone Star Handicap winner.
