MICHAELS IS DAY 1 LEADER IN BELMONT HANDICAPPING CONTEST

ELMONT, N.Y. – Noel Michaels of New York City held a narrow lead over Ronald Lundgren of Franklin Square, N.Y., Saturday at the conclusion of the first day of Belmont Park’s Summer Handicapping Challenge.

Michaels finished the day with $846, which earned him $1,000 for the highest mythical bankroll following Day 1 action. Lundgren’s bankroll totaled $835, while Hank Uffman of Hicksville, N.Y. was in third place with a bankroll of $728.

The tournament format allows each contestant nine $20 win, place, or show mythical wagers and one $40 wager during both days of the weekend competition, which concludes Sunday.

In all, 221 entrants are vying for first prize of $40,000 and a chance to head the three-member Belmont Park team for the 2011 NTRA/Daily Racing Form National Handicapping Championship (NHC), to be held this coming January at the Red Rock Casino, Resort, and Spa in Las Vegas.

The second- and third-place finishers in the Belmont Summer Handicapping Challenge, who will win $14,400 and $7,500 respectively, will round out the Belmont Park team. Additionally, the handicapper with the highest Day 2 bankroll will win $1,000.

Day 1 standings will be available on nyra.com Sunday morning.
