ARLINGTON SPRINT CHAMP ‘CHAMBERLAIN’S’ BRIDGE TO BC TURF SPRINT

Carl Moore’s Chamberlain Bridge, 4 1/2-length hero of Saturday’s Arlington Sprint, came out of that 5 1/2-furlong grass dash in good order and headed back to his home base at Churchill Downs Sunday morning, according to trainer Bret Calhoun.

The Arlington Sprint was Chamberlain Bridge’s 13th win in 27 trips to the post to increase his earnings to $781,445, but more importantly gave the 6-year-old gelding an automatic starting berth in the Grade II Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be run at five furlongs over the Matt Winn Turf Course at Churchill Downs this November.

“He ran a big race yesterday,” said Calhoun, speaking over the phone Sunday morning during training hours.  “We’re very proud of him.  Right now the plan is to run him in a race at Penn National July 31 ($200,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup Handicap at five furlongs on the grass), and then take him to Philadelphia Park for a turf race they have up there Sept. 6 ($250,000 Turf Monster at five furlongs).

“After that, there’s a turf sprint scheduled at Keeneland for early October and then hopefully that will take us into the Breeders’ Cup race in November at Churchill.”

SATURDAY’S GRADE III ARLINGTON OAKS SHAPING UP

Sophomore fillies take center stage this Saturday in Chicago when the 30th renewal of the Grade III Arlington Oaks is offered at nine furlongs over the local Polytrack.

Among the more interesting probable starters in the filly fixture is Team Valor International’s Chantilly Nayla, who didn’t get the best of trips in her last start when she finished fifth in Arlington’s grassy $200,000 American 1000 Guineas May 22.  Prior to that turf test the daughter of Five Star Day was easily second best in Keeneland’s Grade II Beaumont Stakes over Polytrack, broke her maiden over that surface in July last summer at Arlington and won again over the Polytrack at Keeneland last Oct. 23.

During the winter in New Orleans, the Wayne Catalano trainee won once over Fair Grounds’ Stall-Wilson turf course and then once again over the main track in a race originally scheduled for the grass.

Dundalk 5 LLC’s Dundalk Dust is another probable Arlington Oaks contestant whose favored running surface has yet to be determined.  Trained by Chris Block, the daughter Military out of a Beau Genius mare won at first asking last August on yielding ground over Arlington’s world famous turf course, but was sidelined shortly after that.  The Illinois-bred was to return over the local grass June 6, but that race was taken off the turf and run on Polytrack.  Undeterred, Dundalk Dust took to the Polytrack that day, drawing off for a three-length tally.

Barbara Hunter’s Snow Top Mountain is a third filly probable for the Arlington Oaks who appears to be able to negotiate all kinds of ground.  Void of early foot in the Grade III Regret Stakes over the Churchill Downs grass June 12, she rallied boldly in the late stages to finish second by less than a length after previously winning by a length over the Louisville lawn May 13.  Before that, the gray filly broke her maiden by a length and a half April 7 when racing over Keeneland’s Polytrack.

Bluegrass Equine Center, Sky Chai Racing and Twin Creeks Farm’s Age of Humor, another probable starter in the Arlington Oaks, won Aqueduct’s $65,000 Busanda Stakes in January, finished third in Fair Grounds’ Grade III Silverbulletday Stakes in February and second in Turfway’s Grade III Bourbonette Oaks in March, but was unplaced in Churchill’s Grade I Kentucky Oaks in April and Grade III Dogwood Stakes in May.

Considered as possibilities for Saturday’s Arlington Oaks at this time are Jac Mac Stable LLC and C. E. Formby’s Laura Babe, second in allowance company at Churchill Downs last time on June 12; Jerry Jamgotchian’s Morekisssesforpatti, who broke her maiden at last asking on May 10 at Indiana Downs; Glen Hill Farm’s Sweet N Sour Nina, a three-length winner at Arlington in her last start June 20; CresRan’s Tiz Miz Sue, a 5 1/2-length winner in her last start at Delaware Park June 15; and Stone Farm, John Adger, Oak Crest Farm and Michael Stidham’s Upperline, fifth in Keeneland’s Gradde I Ashland in her last start April 3.
