CLEVER TREVOR STAKES FEATURES FIELD OF NINE FRIDAY
OKLAHOMA CITY – The $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes, the second leg in the Remington Park 2-year-old Triple, will be contested Friday night. The seven-furlong event drew a field of nine, led by The Drifter who won the first race in the local series in September.
Owned by Charles Fletcher of Heath, Texas and trained by Cody Autrey, The Drifter won the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes at Remington Park on Sept. 28. The Kip Deville begins the local 2-year-old Triple and is run at six furlongs. The seven-furlong Clever Trevor is next in the series that culminates with the $300,000 Springboard Mile on Sunday, Dec. 9, the final day of the season.
The Drifter has been installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite by Remington Park odds-maker Jerry Shottenkirk. “"The Drifter was very solid in his Kip Deville Stakes win and is deserving of the favorite's role. King Henny, from Hoosier Park, and Louisiana Downs shipper Best of Birdstone also should get their share of support and likely will run well."
The Drifter will be looking for his third stakes victory in his lightly-raced career. The Louisiana-bred gelding won the restricted $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes in July at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas before scoring in the Kip Deville here. None of the eight others in the Clever Trevor have faced The Drifter who will be ridden by Cliff Berry who had the winning assignment in the Kip Deville.
The Drifter is the top winner and earner in the Clever Trevor field with three career triumphs and a lifetime bankroll of $105,000.
Best of Birdstone is the only other stakes winner in the Clever Trevor. Owned by Richard Hogue, Jr. of Hope, Ark. and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Best of Birdstone broke his maiden status in his career debut, the $50,000 Razorback Futurity for Arkansas-breds, run at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La. in September. Luis Quinonez will have the mount on Best of Birdstone.
The complete field for the Clever Trevor Stakes, by saddle and program number with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds:
1. Steelman Run – Kelly Von Hemel, Glenn Corbett, 8-1
2. Real Appeal Deal – Tim G. Williams, Alex Birzer, 15-1
