‘name the stakes race’ to win a day at fair grounds
NEW ORLEANS (Monday, November 5, 2012) – Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots is asking fans for help naming a race that is new to the 2012-2013 stakes schedule. The winner of the “Name the Stakes Race” contest will present the trophy to the winning connections after the inaugural running and enjoy lunch for four in the Clubhouse, a replica of the trophy and a $100 win bet.
The stakes race to be named is a turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs, to be run Feb. 2, the day before Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.
Fans can enter electronically by e-mail (send your suggestion to namethestakesrace@fgno.com), Facebook (post your suggestion at Facebook.com/FairGroundsRaceCourseandSlots under the Nov. 5 “Name the Stakes Race” status update) or Twitter (tweet your suggestion by mentioning @FairGroundsNOLA) or enter in person in the Clubhouse/Valet Lobby throughout opening weekend, Nov. 22-25.
“We’re open to any idea, whether it’s traditional or completely off the wall,” said Vice President & General Manager Eric Halstrom, one of six employees that will determine the winner as part of the Fair Grounds Stakes Name Committee.
Typically, Fair Grounds stakes are named for prominent horses from Fair Grounds history (i.e., the Bonapaw Stakes), prominent humans from Fair Grounds history (i.e., the Buddy Diliberto Memorial Handicap) or relevant geographical locations (i.e., the Gentilly Stakes). To see this season’s full stakes schedule, visit www.fairgroundsracecourse.com/racing-wagering/stakes.
A concurrent contest open only to Fair Grounds employees will result in a moniker for the stakes schedule’s other unnamed race, a turf sprint for 3-year-olds to be run Jan. 26.
Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 25 and the winning race name will be announced in early December.
