MACK’S BLACKHAWK SETS NEW RECORD IN DISTANCE TURF EVENT

OKLAHOMA CITY – A long-distance turf event had the spotlight Wednesday night at Remington Park. A field of eight in a $31,360 Starter Allowance event contested the 1-1/2 miles over the firm course with Mack’s Blackhawk leading every step of the way, setting a new course record as well.

Owned by Joel and Kris Zamzow of Duluth, Minn. and trained by Michael Biehler, Mack’s Blackhawk was ushered away from the starting gate by Chris Landeros and never saw another horse ahead of them. The 6-year-old gelding set a pace where he could have something left and coming off the third and final turn kicked to a clear five-length lead.

Little Wagon tried to rally wide off the last turn but Mack’s Blackhawk had stolen away, winning by 4-1/2 lengths at the end. Crossing the finish in 2:31.72 over the grass, Mack’s Blackhawk set a new turf course record for the rarely run 1-1/2 mile distance. He shaved 6.66 seconds off the old mark that Cumulus set in November 8, 2004, when Remington Park last carded a turf race at 1-1/2 miles.

The wagering favorite at 4-5 odds, Mack’s Blackhawk paid $3.60 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Little Wagon returned $3 to place and $2.20 to show. Strategic Leader was another neck back in third and paid $3 to show.

The win was the 11th from 37 career starts for Mack’s Blackhawk and his second in a row this season at Remington Park. In fact, Mack’s Blackhawk has a four-race winning streak in Oklahoma City dating to Oct. 2011. The winner’s share of $17,847 moves the lifetime earnings for Mack’s Blackhawk to $230,526. A Minnesota-bred by his owners, Mack’s Blackhawk is by Military from the Lear Fan mare Morning Ride.

The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Thursday thru Saturday, Nov. 15-17, with the first race at 6:30pm nightly.

Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park.
