STACHYS WINS LABOR DAY FEATURE WITH RAIL RALLY
OKLAHOMA CITY – Sunny skies and hot temps did not deter a large crowd from enjoying their Labor Day at Remington Park. The steamy weather was no hindrance to Stachys either as he rallied with a rail-move to win the one-mile holiday $40,000 allowance feature.
Owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling of Elk River, Minn. and trained by Michael Biehler, Stachys was fifth, over 10 lengths back of the pace-setting Green Digger as the seven-horse field moved through the final turn. At the top of the stretch, Green Digger faltered and was overtaken by Brethren. Jockey Alex Birzer had asked Stachys for his run leaving the turn and he made up his deficit with just under a furlong remaining.
Stachys flew through an opening to take the lead before reaching down to hold off a charge by Dreaminofthewin. Stachys crossed the finish a half-length in front and stopped the clock in 1:37.95 over the fast track.
Away at 6-1 odds, Stachys paid $14.20 to win, $5.40 to place and $3.60 to show. Dreaminofthewin paid $5.60 to place and $3.60 to show. Cainam was third, 1-1/4 lengths behind the runner-up, paying $5.40 to show.
Stachys won his ninth career race from 25 attempts and it was second victory at Remington Park. He finished third here in the 2010 Oklahoma Derby. A gelded Kentucky-bred by Candy Ride (Arg) from the Wekiva Springs mare Wekiva Mist, Stachys made $23,898 for his Labor Day win to boost his lifetime money to $453,694.
Due to the holiday afternoon racing, there will be no live racing on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season will resume Thursday, Sept. 7 and continue next week thru Saturday, Sept. 8. The first race every night is at 6:30pm.
Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park.
