PATAKY KID AND GOLD EDGE TAKE RICH 2-YEAR-OLD STAKES
AT ARLINGTON PARK
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 8, 2012) – Swifty Farms’ Pataky Kid and Dolphus Morrison’s Gold Edge shared the Saturday spotlight at Arlington Park with their respective victories in the Grade III $150,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity and the Grade III $150,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie.
In the Futurity, Pataky Kid rallied to overtake pacesetting favorite Muppet Man inside the sixteenth pole and despite racing greenly after assuming command, drew away to a three-length victory. With Garrett Gomez in the irons, the Tom Proctor-trained son of Rockport Harbor covered the one-turn mile over Polytrack in 1:37.58.
“He made the lead and I got into him a couple of times,” Gomez explained of his horse’s late-in-the-race antics. “The second time I got into him he didn’t like it too much and he let me know. He ducked out a little bit but I got him straightened out and he continued on his way.”
The Oklahoma-bred picked up his second win in three trips to the post and the $87,300 winner’s share took his earnings into six figures at $116,050.
Muppet Man, the 7-10 post time favorite, broke alertly from the rail and took the field of eight juveniles through fractions of 23.50 seconds, 46.85 seconds, 1:11.57 and 1:24.47 before giving way to the eventual winner. Neither trainer Jimmy DiVito nor jockey Jeffrey Sanchez made any excuses for the runner up.
“I thought he would finish stronger,” Sanchez said of the son of Corinthian.
Stormin Monarcho was third, followed by Ultimo Trago, Mylute, Glenco Kid, the filly Scissortail G and Urban Renewal to complete the order of finish.
A clear second choice in the wagering, Pataky Kid paid $6.80, $3.20 and $2.60. Muppet Man returned $2.40 and $2.20. Stormin Monarcho paid $3.
In the Lassie, Gold Edge rallied in the center of the track to get by the front-stepping La Song to prevail by a neck under jockey Chris Emigh in 1:37.96 for the mile over Polytrack.
“I wasn’t sure we were going to get there until the last couple of jumps,” said Emigh who also rode the daughter of Eddington to her previous victory in the $65,000 Lisa M Stakes here last month. “She’s been training so good (since her last race). I knew she might get beat (today) but they were really going to have to run to beat her. She’s been training awesome and she tries her heart out.”

La Song, a 36-1 outsider breaking from post 12, got to the rail right from the start and led through lively early fractions of 22.89 seconds, 45.65 seconds, 1:10.68 and 1:24.01.
Dancinginthecircle rallied up the fence to finish third, finishing just a nose behind La Song.
“I followed (Gold Edge) all the way but she went (to the outside) late so I followed (La Song) and got through on the inside,” said Rosemary Homeister Jr., who rode Dancinginthecircle.
Gold Edge kept her record intact with three wins in as many starts and boosted her bankroll to $138,429 with the $82,800 winner’s share from the Lassie.
Custody, Pappascat, Bridgette Bordeaux, American Sugar, Dancing Elliebelle, favored Flying Rapunzel, Quiet Success, Bethany Belle and Sweet Redemption was the remaining order at the finish.
At the top of the stretch, You Bought Her stumbled and lost her rider Julio Felix after clipping heels with American Sugar, who was disqualified from seventh and placed last in the 13-horse field. You Bought Her walked off the track under her own power while Julio Felix was taken to Northwest Community Hospital for X-rays.
Gold Edge paid $23.40, $11.60 and $7. La Song returned $25.40 and $12. Dancinginthecircle paid $9.
