TED’S FOLLY EXPERIENCES FIRST REMINGTON LOSS AT HANDS OF POLKA JOKE
OKLAHOMA CITY – Ted’s Folly, the 2011 Remington Park Horse of the Meeting by virtue of a perfect season with six wins from as many starts, suffered his first loss in Oklahoma City. Thursday night, Polka Joke had the upper hand in winning a $49,000 allowance for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings.
Owned by Joan Charlton of Goldsby, Okla. and trained by her husband Brent Charlton, Polka Joke was ridden by Chris Landeros. The gelding came off the lone turn of the 6-1/2 furlong race in fine shape after tracking the pace-setting Kips Hog Wild and jumped to a lead he would not give up with a furlong remaining.
Ted’s Folly, normally a late runner from well off the pace, had no answer and never gained ground as he finished sixth, the beaten 7-5 favorite. Polka Joke pulled clear to score by 2-1/4 lengths over Johnny Whip, crossing the finish in 1:16.23 over the fast track.
An 18-1 longshot, Polka Joke returned $39.60 to win, $12 to place and $8 to show. Johnny Whip paid $7.80 to place and $4.60 to show. Z Rockstar was third, 1-1/4 lengths behind the runner-up, paying $2.40 to show.
The victory was the third from seven career starts for Polka Joke, a son of Sasha’s Prospect from the Tricky Creek mare Tricky Little Slew. In winning his Remington Park debut, Polka Joke picked up $28,347 to push his career bankroll to $62,502.
The race served as a prep race for next month’s $50,000 Tishomingo Stakes for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings.
Remington Park racing continues Friday and Saturday at 6:30pm nightly. The $50,000 Ricks Memorial Stakes is featured on Friday evening. A special holiday afternoon program on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 3 will begin at 1:30pm.
