EIGHT FILLIES AND MARES SEEK BLACK TYPE IN SHINE AGAIN STAKES
BALTIMORE, 03-31-11---Eight fillies and mares will meet in Saturday’s $50,000 Shine Again Stakes, the first of twenty-two black type races to be offered during Pimlico’s marquee spring meeting.
Maryland Jockey Club oddsmaker Frank Carulli has made D Day the 5-2 morning line favorite to add a stakes victory to her resume. The Sam Crock trainee, who is making her 2011 debut, will ship from Delaware Park and carry Jeremy Rose in the 1-1/16th mile test. The daughter of Polish Miner has not won a race since January 2009.
Lily Quatorze (3-1) has not raced since New Year’s Day, when she easily handled a group of optional claimers at Laurel Park. A three-time winner from a dozen starts, including two straight, the daughter of Louis Quatorze will carry Chris Ho for trainer Taryn Tagg.
Amelia’s Brio (9-2) served up five on-the-board finishes in eight races last year. Her best stakes efforts were a third place finish in the Maryland Million Ladies and a fourth in the Maryland Racing Media Handicap. Janon Fisher trains the Crowd Pleaser mare. Geovany Garcia is her regular rider.
Claimed for $12,500 on New Year’s Day at Parx Racing, Princess Malka (9-2) has already won three times this year. Now in the barn of Phil Schoenthal, the Hennessy mare will carry Sheldon Russell on Saturday.
Secret Peace (6-1) is 1-3-1 in six lifetime starts and her only off-the-board finish came in her debut. Secret Peace’s last effort was a game second in allowance company in early February at Laurel. Erick Rodriguez will ride the Indian Charlie filly for Larry Murray.
“There isn’t anything real scary in here,” Murray said. “There seems to be a good deal of speed, especially Lily Quatorze. Secret Peace has only gone long one time but she tries hard and we are seeing if we can pick up some black type.”
Murray will also saddle Today’s Treasure (6-1), who is winless since taking her debut in September 2009. She had a couple of near-misses in late 2010 and disappointed as the betting favorite in her last try, an allowance test at Laurel on Feb. 10. Rodriquez is named to ride this filly as well though Murray indicated he is hoping to enter the daughter of Mineshaft in an allowance race on Sunday’s card (entries close Friday afternoon).
“She has been a bit of a disappointment,” added Murray. “The day she broke her maiden we thought we were sitting on something special. She trains like a good one and doesn’t have any issues but I guess she is what she is. I don’t really want to run both of them Saturday but Today’s Treasure needs to run so if the race doesn’t fill or we cannot get in, we’ll run them both.”
Completing the field are Grandiloquent (10-1) and Trez (12-1). The former, a two-time winner from fifteen starts, will have Grant Whitacre riding for trainer Donald Barr. The latter, also a two-time winner, finished a tiring fifth in the Wide Country Stakes at Laurel, her most recent start. J D Acosta has been named to ride for trainer Stephanie Beattie.
