GReat mills proves best in juvenile turf sprint

NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, December 23, 2010) – Millennium Farms’ Great Mills stalked the pace set by Carl R. Moore’s Yankee Gone South, challenged the leader approaching the quarter-pole and inched clear to win Thursday’s $45,000 maiden special weight feature at 5 ½ furlongs over the Stall-Wilson turf course by 2 ¾ lengths.

The winner, a Kentucky-bred dark bay or brown colt by War Front conditioned by leading trainer Steve Asmussen and ridden by Shane Sellers, completed the distance in 1:04.36 to win for the first time in his second start and earn his first $22,200. Gone South held on for second by a nose over the third-place finisher, Southern Equine Stables’ Birdie Beats Par, in a field of 10.

Great Mills returned mutuels of $21, $7.80 and $6; Yankee Gone South paid $4 and $3.40; and Birdie Beats Park was worth $12 to show.
