PACIFIC TSUNAMI REELS IN VICTORY, BERRY QUADRUPLES
OKLAHOMA CITY – Jockey Cliff Berry won four races Saturday night at Remington Park to give him some breathing room at the top of the rider standings. His fourth and final victory came aboard Pacific Tsunami who enjoyed a perfect pace scenario to rally down the stretch in a $20,000 starter allowance sprint at six furlongs.
A short and talented field of six contained plenty of speed to set things up for Pacific Tsunami who tends to run his best races from off the pace. Owned by Chuck Ogle, Jr. of Weatherford, Texas and trained by Bret Calhoun, Pacific Tsunami moved wide around the lone turn under Berry to get in position for his run. At the top of the stretch, Pacific Tsunami began to inch up on the three-way battle at the front between Tomahawk Creek, Range War and Momma’s Badnews.
Pacific Tsunami moved outside of his rivals, picking off all three with just a furlong to go. The 4-year-old gelding pulled clear to win by a length over stable-mate Range War, also trained by Calhoun. Cowboy Charlie rallied for third while Cabe gained for fourth. Tomahawk Creek and Momma’s Badnews faded to fifth and sixth respectively.
Pacific Tsunami handled six furlongs in 1:10.21 over the fast track. Away at 3-1 odds, he paid $8.40 to win, $3 to place and $2.40 to show. Range War returned $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Cowboy Charlie paid $2.40 to show.
The win was the 11th from 22 career starts for Pacific Tsunami, a Texas-bred gelding by Magic Cat from the Eastern Echo mare Pacific Echo. It was his second win at Remington Park, both taking place this season. The winner’s share of $11,955 boosted his overall earnings to $153,897.
Berry’s first three wins came aboard Soulful Silver ($6.40 to win) in the second race; Go Okie Go ($21.60) in the sixth and Lucky Lipstick ($5.80) in the eighth. The riding quadruple leaves Berry with 60 wins for the season with just four racing dates remaining. He holds a six-win lead over Ramsey Zimmerman (54 wins) in the standings.
The final week of the 2010 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season takes place Wednesday thru Saturday, Dec. 8-11. The first race each night is at 5:30pm.
The season will finish on Saturday, Dec. 11 with the richest 2-year-old stakes race of the meeting featured, the $250,000 Springboard Mile.
