BOYCE RIDES THREE WINNERS, INCLUDING 100TH OF YEAR
LAUREL, MD. 11-18-10---Forest Boyce rode three winners on Thursday’s nine-race card at Laurel Park to increase her lead in the jockey standings. It was the fourth three-bagger for the apprentice during the fall meeting, which began Sept. 11.
In the opener, the 26-year-old guided Pink Palace ($9.60) to a maiden score for her 100th victory of the year. The win was the first for trainer Francis Abbott, who was saddling his first runner as a conditioner.
“It was funny the way that worked out,” said Boyce, a graduate of the Garrison Forest School in Baltimore County and Maryland Institute College of Art. “We (Boyce and agent Jay “Shug” Burtis) were up at Fair Hill a few weeks back (Nov. 5) to work a horse for someone else. We worked that horse then walked into the barn when he asked us to work this filly. So we did and it turns out he has some really nice horses. It is really exciting to be aboard his first winner. It made that 100th win ever better.”
Boyce picked up her second and third trips to the winners’ circle in back-to-back races as Capixaba ($3) and Morumsco ($4.40) were popular winners of the sixth and seventh races respectively.
At the end of the 2010 Pimlico spring meeting, Boyce had just 18 victories from 148 mounts at the major Maryland tracks. Since returning from Colonial Downs, Boyce tops the colony with 60 first place finishes from 301 mounts. After capturing the riding title at the brief summer meet, Boyce has a 17-win advantage over the injured Sheldon Russell (45-28) during the current stand.
“Without the right horse you cannot win and all of a sudden at the end of the Colonial meet some top trainers started using me which has made all the difference in the world,” added Boyce.
Boyce will become a journeyman rider on Dec. 11.
