BUDDY’S SAINT BREAKS DOWN DURING MORNING WORKOUT

ELMONT, N.Y. – Buddy’s Saint, a promising graded stakes winner that had been nearing a return to the races, broke down in a workout this morning on the Belmont Park main track and had to be euthanized.

The 3-year-old son of Saint Liam, trained by Bruce Levine, had a very impressive 2009 juvenile campaign including wins in the Grade 2 Nashua and Remsen at Aqueduct Racetrack.

According to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, Chief Examining Veterinarian of The New York Racing Association, Inc., Buddy’s Saint fractured his left shoulder while breezing on Belmont’s main track.

In his first race this year, Buddy’s Saint finished ninth as the 9-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream in February, and was subsequently sidelined with a bone chip in his right front ankle that required surgery.

He had returned to the worktab on August 28 and had 11 published workouts with the most recent being four furlongs at Belmont in 48.67 on November 8.
