KENTUCKY DERBY STARTER IN RACE 5 SUNDAY AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park’s Oklahoma Derby program on Sunday features 10 solid events with competitive fields and five stakes races providing an excellent racing experience for all fans and horseplayers. Midway through the card, there is an alum from this year’s Kentucky Derby who is reinventing his career.
Backtalk, a two-time graded stakes winner as a 2-year-old, is entered in a $40,000 allowance sprint at six furlongs in race five Sunday. Owned by Gold Mark Stable of Ocala, Fla. and trained by Tom Amoss, Backtalk competed in Super Saver’s Kentucky Derby this year but faded to the end of the field finishing 20th.
A 3-year-old colt by 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, Backtalk won the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga as a 2-year-old. Both of the races were six-furlong events, just as the allowance on Sunday. He is undefeated at the distance.
As a 3-year-old, Backtalk finished third in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in April, using that event as his prep for the Kentucky Derby. Since the opening race of this year’s Triple Crown, Backtalk has started just twice with his best effort coming in the seven-furlong, $400,000 Red Legend Stakes at Charlestown in West Virginia where he was third.
Jockey Cliff Berry will ride Backtalk who drew the outside post position, number six, in the field of six that includes stakes-winning sprinters this year Humble Smarty, Salt Flat Speed and Windy Lou.
Backtalk has won four of his 10 career races with total earnings of $334,876.
The first post on Oklahoma Derby Day, the lone Sunday afternoon of the season is at 1:30pm. Ahead of the Oklahoma Derby are stellar stakes races including the $50,000 Flashy Lady Stakes (race 6, 3:53pm); the $150,000 Remington Green Stakes (race 7, 4:22pm); the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes (race 8, 4:51pm) and the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks (race 9, 5:20pm).
The $400,000 Oklahoma Derby is race 10, scheduled for 5:49pm.
Live racing continues leading up to Oklahoma Derby Sunday, tonight thru Saturday at 6:30pm. All times are central.
