RUNAWAY OKIE HANDLES OKLAHOMA-BRED FOES

OKLAHOMA CITY – The initial start of the Remington Park season for Runaway Okie proved victorious as the 4-year-old gelding pulled away to win by two lengths in Wednesday’s $33,200 allowance feature for state-bred foes.

Owned by Chad Byrd of Noble, Okla. and trained by Ron Blair, Runaway Okie took control in the stretch of the 1 mile-70 yard event under Cliff Berry. After pressuring an early pace, Runaway Okie had plenty in reserve to hold off a late attempt by Deadwood Desperado with I’m A Slew Man finishing another 5-1/4 lengths behind the runner-up for third.

Runaway Okie crossed the finish in 1:44.46 over a fast track in winning at 5-2 odds and paying $7.80 to win, $4.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Deadwood Desperado returned $11.20 to place and $6.80 to show. I’m A Slew Man paid
$3.20 to show.

Okie City was the beaten 5-2 wagering favorite in the race, finishing sixth in the field of seven.

A son of Perfect Soul (Ire) from the Runaway Groom mare Runaway Magic, Runaway Okie won for the second time in 10 career starts and for the first time in five Remington Park attempts. The winner’s check of $19,360 moved his career earnings to $44,767.

The win with Runaway Okie kept Berry in a tie for the lead in the jockey standings with seven wins. Aaron Gryder posted two wins with Cactus Kate ($10.20 to win) in the opener and Gittin Comfy ($16.60) in the third race to give him seven on the season and a share of the lead.

Remington Park’s holiday racing week continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6:30pm with a special program on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 6 at 1:30pm.
