CHAVEZ’S X-RAYS NEGATIVE AFTER SPILL AT BELMONT PARK

ELMONT, N.Y. – X-rays were negative on jockey Jorge Chavez, a winner of 18 New York riding titles, after a spill that occurred Wednesday, September 22 at Belmont Park.

The 48-year-old Peruvian jockey was riding Pea Stone for trainer Faustino Ramos when the 2-1 favorite fell going around the far turn in Belmont’s fifth race, a $25,000 turf claiming event on the Widener Turf Course.

Chavez, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby aboard Monarchos, was taken to North Shore Hospital in Manhasset. While x-rays were clear, as of this release Chavez is still in the hospital while doctors determine whether or not he needs an additional CAT scan. It is possible that he could be released from the hospital tonight.

Pea Stone, a 4-year-old daughter of Smart Strike, was euthanized after suffering a compound fracture of her left front leg.
