STIDHAM HOPING ROUGH SAILING GETS SMOOTH SEAS SATURDAY

Jack Smith Thoroughbreds’ Rough Sailing encountered nothing but rough sailing when he broke his maiden over Arlington’s world-famous turf course in his career debut Aug. 8, and will go into Saturday’s Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity as an interesting third choice in the morning line where he has been pegged at 4-1.

“I would say he had a whole lot of trouble in that last race,” said trainer Mike Stidham Thursday morning while previewing Rough Sailing’s chances on Arlington’s centerpiece event for 2-year-old colts and geldings to be contested at one-mile over Arlington’s Polytrack course.  “He got held up, got stopped again turning for home, but was still able to get going again and prevail at the wire.”

A son on the noted turf sire Mizzen Mast, Rough Sailing will be making his first start over Arlington’s Polytrack this weekend, but turf breeding and Polytrack have been known to be complimentary to each other in their relatively brief past association.

“We’re hoping he can transfer his turf form to the Poly on Saturday,” said Stidham.  “He’s always worked well over the Poly for us.”

LASSIE’S CREPE MYRTLE, SUMMER SAVORY PEAKING AT RIGHT TIME

In South Carolina, the plant crepe myrtle blossoms in the spring but holds its bloom throughout the summer, and since the 2-year-old filly Crepe Myrtle is out of a mare named Myrtle Beach, the separate universes of botany and biology – at least in this instance – might indeed be parallel.

In Ohio, on the other hand, where horse chestnuts (buckeyes) grow and maturity is reached in late summer or early fall, a juvenile daughter of the sire Horse Chestnut – aptly named Summer Savory – might be just coming into her own.

Both Crepe Myrtle and Summer Savory are trained by Mike Stidham, whose presence in the winner’s circle following Arlington’s 2010 stakes races has been remarkably frequent, and both fillies have been entered in Saturday’s Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie, the northwest Chicago oval’s showcase race for juvenile members of the distaff set.  The one-turn one-mile event will be run over Arlington’s Polytrack course.

John H. Adger, Oakcrest Farm LLC, Three Kings Stable and Hilary Pridham’s Crepe Myrtle was unimpressive in her career debut July 8 when going five furlongs but rebounded to win by a nose when breaking her maiden in her second start Aug. 5 when going a mile and a sixteenth.

“Crepe Myrtle is owned by a whole bunch of people (including Stidham’s assistant trainer Pridham),” said Stidham Thursday, “and all of them are hoping for a real big effort out of her on Saturday.

“Summer Savory (owned by the Stone Farm of Arthur Hancock III in partnership with Stidham) missed by a half-length in her only start,” said Stidham, “but we felt she ran better than it looked like she did.  Her numbers were pretty good in that race, and we feel the added distance on Saturday will be to her advantage.”

DADE BABE KISSES VICTORY IN ARLINGTON’S PUCKER UP STAKES

“Whee, that was fun, wasn’t it?” said Patti Miller, wife and assistant to trainer Danny Miller as she approached the winner’s circle following Dade Babe’s fast front-running victory Monday’s Grade III Pucker Up Stakes at Arlington.

Dade Babe, owned by Lawrence Peifer, had just completed a facile 3 1/2-length score in the nine-furlong Pucker Up after leading by 10 entering the lane.

“She came out of the race real good,” said Danny Miller Thursday morning.  “We’re hoping that race of hers Monday should be enough to get her invited to Keeneland’s (Grade I Queen Elizabeth II (Challenge Cup Oct. 16).  If not, there’s another race for 3-year-old fillies down there for her (Grade III Pin Oak Valley View Oct. 22.)  It should be one of those two races for her next start.

“She’s finally learning how to race,” concluded Miller.  “She’s finally started to come into herself.  I was very pleased with the way she ran the other day.  I would think that was a good race for her, even though the timer was not working.”

REMINDER: FRIDAY POST TIME 2 P.M.

Arlington guests and fans of Arlington’s simulcast signal are reminded that Friday’s first race will go to the post at 2 p.m.
