THIRTY-ONE NOMINATED TO
Twenty-three 2-year-old colts and eight juvenile geldings have been nominated to Saturday’s 75th renewal of the Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity.
The one-turn one-mile extended sprint serves as Arlington’s traditional main event for equine youngsters who might go on to compete in next springs’ Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
Dream Walkin Farms’ Sherriff Cogburn, easy winner of the $60,000 Prairie Meadows Juvenile on Aug. 6 in Iowa at last asking and a impressive seven-length winner in his career debut at Arlington July 1, is expected to try to remain undefeated in the local Futurity, whose past winners include 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck, 1991 Preakness and Belmont winner Hansel and 1987 Belmont winner Bet Twice.
Dream Walkin Farms, the nom-de-course of country and western singer Toby Keith – whose first big hit was “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” – previously won the 2003 Arlington-Washington Futurity with Cactus Ridge, trained by Bret Calhoun. Sherriff Cogburn is trained by Don Von Hemel.
Capable of making an arresting exacta combination in Saturday’s Futurity is McNeill Stables’ Caleb’s Posse, trained by Donnie K. Von Hemel, the elder Von Hemel’s son. Caleb’s Posse finished second to Sherriff Cogburn in their lifetime bows, but broke his maiden by 2 3/4-lengths in his next start at

One of the more interesting nominations to the Arlington-Washington Futurity, and also an expected starter is the Irish-bred Moment of Weakness, owned by Winter Park Partners and trained by James Lloyd.

An altered son of Big Bad Bob out of the Night Shift mare Kristal’s Dream won his first two starts on the Emerald Isle but finished fifth in
Jack Smith Thoroughbreds’ Rough Sailing, who broke his maiden in his only career start here Aug. 8 over Arlington’s world famous turf course, and Mervin and Barbara McNamara’s Weekend Wildcat, who broke his maiden at Churchill Downs May 20 but was most recently sixth at Woodbine Aug. 12, are also expected to run in the Futurity.
ARLINGTON-WASHINGTON LASSIE NOMINATIONS
Twenty-eight 2-year-old fillies have been nominated to Saturday’s 75th renewal of the Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes,
Nancy Mazzoni’s She Be Wild, trained by Arlington’s perennial leading conditioner Wayne Catalano, took down winning honors in last year’s Lassie and then went on to win the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Catalano also saddled Frank Calabrese’s Dreaming of Liz to win the 2007 Lassie.
Darrell and Evelyn Yates Ltd.’s Jordy Y, also trained by Catalano, is undefeated in two starts and is expected to head the field in Saturday’s Lassie. The daughter of Congrats out of the Fly So Free mare Debt Free won her last start Aug. 1 by a length and a half at
Mark Dedomenicos’ Wonderlandbynight, conditioned by Michael Reavis, finished second under the wire in her career debut here June 4 but was adjudged the winner some time later after breaking her maiden June 27. The daughter of Sky Mesa then journeyed north of the border to win Woodbine’s $150,000 Ontario Deb Stakes Aug. 14.
Reavis previously saddled Flaxbeard, Oliphant and Sharp’s Shining Light to win the Lassie in 1994.
John Adger, Oakcrest Farm, Three Kings Stable and Hilary Pridham’s Crepe Myrtle, who broke her maiden at last asking Aug. 5; Robert Zoellner’s Larue Lovelake, who won her career bow June 24 at Prairie Meadows; Mueller Thoroughbred Stable’s Miss Inclined, who won her last start on the grass here Aug. 26; and Curtis Green’s One Star, a winner here July 29; are also likely for the Lassie.
Two maidens, Sullimar Stable’s Edie and Stone Farm and Michael Stidham’s Summer Savory, are also expected to try to win for the first time in the Lassie.
