WILEY WAGNER SIXTH IN RETURN RIDE
LAUREL, MD. 08-08-10---One week after her 47th birthday, Mary Wiley Wagner finished sixth aboard Ms Millie Robbins in Sunday’s finale at Laurel Park, a $25,000 claiming maiden claimer contested at 5-1/2 furlongs over the turf. Wiley Wagner decided to come out of retirement following a fourth place finish in the inaugural Lady Legends for the Cure Race™ aboard Mass Destruction at Pimlico Race Course on Preakness weekend.
“I felt very alert and every thought was crystal clear,” said Wiley Wagner, who had a ride at Delaware Park in-between the Pimlico and Laurel mounts. “Things happen so fast out there so you always wonder if you still have the instincts.”
Ms Millie Robbins broke a little slowly, then picked it up through the turn and rallied under right hand whipping to finish with a flourish.
“The speed favoring turf course worked against us today,” added Wiley Wagner.
Ranked among the top five apprentice riders in the nation in 1983, the Annapolis High School graduate won 275 races before retiring in 1997. She is now a real estate agent, mother of two daughters and a breast cancer survivor. She is the wife of Maryland Jockey Club starter Bruce Wagner.
“My kids and husband are supportive. I was still getting chemo treatments when I was asked to participate in the Lady Legends race,” Wiley Wagner said Friday afternoon. “I worked really, really hard to get fit. I didn’t realize how much I missed getting on race horses in the morning and the atmosphere during the afternoon.”
BOYCE EXTENDS LEAD IN JOCKEY STANDINGS
Apprentice jockey Forest Boyce had a riding double for the third consecutive day and now leads the rider standings with eight victories, four more than Travis Dunkelberger and Erick Rodriguez. The 25-year-old scored with Queshua ($6.60-third) and Devilish Gait ($9.40-ninth) on Sunday’s card.
ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER TRACK RECORD
One day after Tobes the Man established a new 5 ½ furlong record on the Laurel Park turf course, Super Chunky knocked nearly a half-second off the mark stopping the clock in 1:00.71 in a $28,000 allowance test. Trained by Kenny Cox and ridden by Malcolm Franklin, the four-year-old son of Put it Back paid $10.20.
