WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK AT SARATOGA

WHAT:           Week #2 at Saratoga Race Course

WHEN:           Wednesday, July 28 – Tuesday, August 3

WHERE:        Saratoga Race Course and various locations in Saratoga Springs

THURSDAY, JULY 29

·        Mid-Summer St. Patrick’s Day: Saratoga Race Course will bring horseracing fans a double-dose of charm with the second annual Mid-Summer St. Patrick’s Day. Presented by Bailey’s, the day-long celebration of Irish culture and heritage will feature traditional Irish food and drink as well as Irish music, dance and entertainment.

Bagpipers with the Orange County AOH Pipes and Drums from Monroe, NY, will greet patrons at the grandstand and clubhouse entrances, and will parade through the backyard to the apron of the main track at 12:30 p.m., while students from the Boland School of Irish Dance in Troy perform in step with the music. Local Irish favorite The McKrells will perform at the bandstand from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The backyard will also be filled with the sounds of Ireland with performances from Irish bands throughout the day, including the seven-member Celtic Sessions located near Bunbury’s Pub and the Fergus Begley Band next to the Big Red Springs.

This year’s event will also present fans with the chance to win a trip to Ireland, courtesy of Yankee Trails World Travel. The grand prize winner will receive a $3000 voucher to plan the trip of their dreams. Track patrons can enter to win near the track entrance on Union Avenue.

While taking in all the festivities, trackgoers will enjoy Irish pub favorites Guinness, Harp and Smithwick's along with classic Irish fare such as bangers n' bacon rolls and hot corned beef sandwiches. Special decor will also lend a decidedly Irish flair to the afternoon. As the presenting sponsor of this year's mid-summer festival, Bailey's Irish-themed cocktails will be available at a half dozen cocktail bars on track, including Bunburry's Pub.

·        Saratoga Short-Sleeve T-Shirt Giveaway: Fans will double their luck with the first premium giveaway of the season, a special Irish-themed short-sleeve t-shirt, free with paid admission, while supplies last.

·        $100,000 Guaranteed Thursday Pick 6: As part of a series of three different guaranteed wagers for the 2010 meet, NYRA will for the first time offer a $100,000 Guaranteed Thursday Pick 6. This is a $2 minimum wager in which the bettor must correctly select the winners of six consecutive races. By guaranteeing the wager, NYRA will supplement the net difference if the total pool is less than $100,000.

FRIDAY, JULY 30

·        College Day: Saratoga Race Course will welcome college students back to their favorite course with the second annual College Day. All students will receive free grandstand admission with a valid college I.D.

The highlight of the event will be a chance for students to win a $1,000 scholarship after each of the day’s races, courtesy of NYRA, along with many other great prizes including an iPad, digital camera, and gift cards from Dunkin’ Donuts, Juicy Burgers & More, Subway and iTunes. SUNY Cobleskill, The Sage Colleges and Excelsior College will match the $1,000 scholarship from NYRA with additional money toward tuition should any of their students be named a scholarship recipient on College Day. The University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) will also supplement NYRA’s offer with an additional $2,000 in scholarship money for those students accepted into its innovative track management program. Additionally, the Race for Education will underwrite the $1,000 scholarship to be awarded following the Fleet Indian stakes race.

Beginning at noon, students may register to win the scholarships and many other prizes at the Big Red Spring located in the backyard. The first 1,000 students to register will receive a commemorative College Day t-shirt. Fans will have the chance to test their skills on the new interactive video game DJ Hero under the guidance of the pros from FLY 92.3. Students can also jump into the special inflatable joust arena to compete in the bungee run or one-on-one jousting matches.

·        Party at the Spa: College Day coincides with the meet’s first “Party at the Spa,” which features a special 2:30 p.m. post time and culminates in the last race of the day under a setting sun. Previously held in the backyard at Saratoga, the post-racing event will be reenergized and relocated to the area surrounding the jockey statues near the clubhouse entrance. Fans are invited to stay after the races as the fun continues with a block party outside the clubhouse gates featuring a mix of great food, drinks, and live music from The Sean G. Dolan Band.

SATURDAY, JULY 31

·        Fasig-Tipton Festival of Racing: The second annual Fasig-Tipton Festival of Racing will return to celebrate the rich partnership between racing and yearling sales with a variety of special events. The Festival is part of the lead up to the 2010 Saratoga Selected Yearlings sale and the New York-bred Preferred Yearlings sale, which will be held on August 2-3 and August 7-8, respectively, at the newly renovated Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion on East Avenue.

Fasig-Tipton is offering a $500 prize to the grooms who do the best job preparing their horses for the Fasig Stakes and Finney Stakes as part of their “Best Turned-Out Horse” contest. For humans, Fasig-Tipton is holding “Best Turned-Out Filly” contests on July 31 and August 1, with a prize to the most fashionable woman at the track on each day.

Track patrons will be able to participate in the “Follow the Fasig-Tipton Grads” contest during the Festival. Whenever a Fasig-Tipton sales graduate competes, one name will be drawn, and the lucky winner will be able to watch the race from a VIP area of the racetrack.

·        A Dandy Day: The Fasig-Tipton Festival will be highlighted by the running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Diana for fillies and mares on the turf and the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy, the traditional Travers prep race for three-year-olds.

·        Guaranteed Saturday Pick 4: NYRA will offer the second of three guaranteed wagers during the 2010 Saratoga Meet on Saturday: a $500,000 Guaranteed Late Pick 4. This marks the second consecutive year that NYRA has offered a $500,000 guarantee on the Saturday Late Pick 4, a $1 minimum wager in which the bettor must correctly pick the winners of four consecutive races.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 1

·        The Ruffian: The second day of the Fasig-Tipton Festival will be highlighted by the Spa debut of the Grade 1, $250,000 Ruffian for fillies and mares, which moves to Saratoga from its traditional home at Belmont. The day will also feature the Grade 2, $150,000 Fourstardave Handicap and the $75,000 Curlin for three-year olds.

MONDAY, AUGUST 2

·        Dunkin’ Donuts Mondays: Dunkin’ Donuts will guide racing fans throughout the 40-day meet as the title sponsor of the time-honored Daily Double wagering tradition. The new Dunkin’ Donuts Daily Double will be offered on both the early and late doubles each day at Saratoga Race Course. Dunkin’ Donuts customers and racing fans will also receive a number of extra perks on Mondays. All fans who present their Dunkin’ Donuts rechargeable card at the track admission gates on Mondays will receive $2 off the price of grandstand admission. Additionally, each Monday three Post Parade program books sold on track will feature a commemorative Dunkin’ Donuts 60th birthday sticker on the Dunkin’ Donuts advertisement. The lucky program book recipients will each receive a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card worth $60 in honor of Dunkin’s 60th birthday.

·        Jockey Autograph Book Mondays: Racing fans will have their pen ready for the meet’s popular Jockey Autograph Book giveaway. The first 3,500 patrons through the gates with paid admission will receive the collector’s book, in which fans can gather the signatures of their favorite jockeys. This year’s book features the top 12 jockeys from 2009, eight additional jockeys representing the NYRA colony and fan-favorite Sam the Bugler with photos, graphics, statistics and room for autographs. Sponsored by Price Chopper, the autograph books will be available each Monday (excluding Labor Day).
