SUNDAY’S CHICAGO ‘CAP KICKS OFF INFORMED DECISION’S BC CAMPAIGN

No horse had won back-to-back runnings of Arlington’s Grade III Chicago Handicap since J. J. Devaney’s Lazer Show repeated in 1987 after taking the inaugural edition one year earlier, but now Augustin Stable’s Informed Decision has accomplished that same feat.

Informed Decision, of course, used last summer’s Chicago ‘Cap to pave her way to a win in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint as the culmination of her 2009 season, and her Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard plans a similar campaign this year for the daughter of 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos.  Informed Decision’s regular rider Julien Leparoux was aboard once again.

“She did only win by a small margin, but she was giving nine pounds,” noted Sheppard of Informed Decision, who was vanned through the Arlington stable gate before daylight Monday morning.

Eric Reed, trainer of Chicago Handicap runner-up Rinterval, owned by Jerry Jamgotchian, was similarly pleased with the effort put forth by his Irish-bred mare who made the pace under jockey Julio Felix.

“It was close,” said Reed, speaking over the phone from Kentucky Monday morning of Rinterval’s defeat by a head, “but we had a lot of fun up there.  Everybody treated us really well.

“She’s back at Keeneland this morning, and she came out of the race not nearly as tired as I thought she would,” said Reed.  “I think we’d like to keep her on Polytrack for now.  That seems to be her best surface, so I think you’ll see us come back up there to Arlington in about six weeks.”

Michael Stidham’s Secret Kin and Team Block’s Never Retreat, third and fourth respectively in the Chicago Handicap and both with stakes wins to their credit earlier this year, also ran well and came out of Sunday’s race without problems.

LEPAROUX RIDES A TRIPLE IN FIRST 2010 ARLINGTON APPEARANCE

It was the Fourth of July at Arlington Sunday, but invading French-born jockey Julien Leparoux, who returned the saddle July 1 after being sidelined six weeks with a spinal injury, rode like he was celebrating Bastille Day.

Not only did he win the Grade III Chicago Handicap astride Augustin Stable’s Informed Decision for Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, but earlier in the day won with his first mount aboard PEG Racing’s Versailles Road for trainer Ian Wilkes and closed out the afternoon with a win astride Destreza Stable’s Trois Desir for conditioner Mike Maker.

After coming to the United States in 2006, Leparoux rode a triple during his one of his brief visits to Arlington that summer and also captured the Grade I Beverly D. aboard Martin Schwartz’s Gorella and the Grade III Arlington Handicap on Flying Zee Stable’s Cosmonaut.  In 2007 he repeated in the Arlington Handicap with Cosmonaut and also won the Grade I Secretariat Stakes on Triple B. Farm’s Shamdinan.

Leparoux, who posted a riding double on the Arlington Million Day undercard last summer, is scheduled return to Arlington this summer for Million Preview Day July 17.

QUINCY SCORES A HAT TRICK ON FIRECRACKER DAY

Jockey Quincy Hamilton jumped up a notch to eighth in the standings after scoring his first riding triple of the season on the Fourth of July.

The 26-year-old reinsman, born in Jasper, Texas, and now riding at Arlington for the second summer of his career, won Sunday’s opener aboard Wildcat Thoroughbred’s Pure Polished for trainer Tammy Domenosky, came back to the winner’s circle after the sixth aboard LeJohn Mucker’s Gift Coupon for conditioner John Hill Jr., and completed his troika in the seventh race astride Josephine Abercrombie’s Admissible for trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel.

Earlier this year, Hamilton posted riding doubles twice during the local meeting which began April 29.
