MOTT TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCH AT TONIGHT’S YANKEE GAME

 

ELMONT, N.Y. – Belmont Stakes-winning trainer Bill Mott gets a chance to show off his arm when he throws out the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium before tonight’s game between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.

 

“It’s about as exciting as anything you could ever do,” said Mott, who on June 5 saddled Drosselmeyer to a 13-1 upset in the $1 million Belmont Stakes, the final leg of racing’s Triple Crown.

 

Drosselmeyer’s victory was the first in a Triple Crown race for the Hall of Fame trainer, who is best known for campaigning two-time Horse of the Year Cigar, winner of 16 straight races from 1994-1996.

 

Mott, a 57-year-old native of South Dakota, often sports a New York Yankees cap around his barns at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, which is not surprising as he currently trains horses for Kinsman Farm in Ocala, Florida.

 

The Eclipse Award winner as the nation’s top trainer in 1995 and 1996, Mott was inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame in 1998 at the age of 45, the youngest trainer to achieve the honor.
