CLEVER TREVOR LURES TRAVELING 2-YEAR-OLDS TO REMINGTON PARK

OKLAHOMA CITY – The $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes, the second-leg of Remington Park’s 2-year-old Triple Series, drew a field of eight to go seven furlongs on Friday night. Half the entrants made their most recent start outside Oklahoma, including a Grade 3 winner and another who was fifth in the Grade 1, Del Mar Futurity.

Dunkin Bend won the Grade 3, $100,000 Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanside, N.J. on Sept. 1. Owned by Michael Langford of Jonesboro, Ark. and trained by Steve Asmussen, the colt by Dunkirk is on a two-race winning streak as he shed his maiden status with a 5-3/4 length win at Saratoga in upstate New York in early August.

Working most recently at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., Dunkin Bend will have Ricardo Santana aboard for the Clever Trevor and has been tabbed the 7-5 morning-line favorite.

Trainer Cody Autrey entered Guns Loaded for the Clever Trevor and named Cliff Berry to the mount. Guns Loaded was fifth in the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4.

Owned by Ywachetta and James Driver of Irving, Texas, Guns Loaded will be making his first start away from Del Mar. All three of his career efforts were at the showplace where “the surf meets the turf” in southern California. In addition to the Del Mar Futurity effort, Guns Loaded was third in the Grade 2, $150,000 Best Pal Stakes in August. The resume for Guns Loaded lands him as the second choice in the morning line at 5-2 odds.

A pair of entrants made their most recent attempts at Indiana Downs. Mister Pollard was third in the $85,000 Indiana Futurity for Indiana-bred runners on Oct. 19 after winning the $85,000 Hillsdale against similar company in late September. Trained by Michael Lauer, jockey Luis Quinonez has been assigned the riding engagement on Mister Pollard.

Bump Start has made only one career start but was impressive enough to earn a Clever Trevor opportunity. Trained by Kellyn Gorder, Bump Start broke his maiden at Indiana Downs in August by 9-3/4 lengths. Owned by TK Stables of Grand Island, Neb., Bump Start has been training at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Alex Birzer will ride Bump Start on Friday.

The top horse that has competed locally for the Clever Trevor Stakes is Smack Smack, the third-place finisher in the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes. Owned by Toby Keith’s Dream Walkin Farms of Norman, Okla. and trained by Don Von Hemel, Smack Smack will have regular rider Jake Barton up for the Clever Trevor. The Kip Deville Stakes began the 2-year-old Triple Series locally.

The $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes field, by program and saddle-towel order, with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds for the Clever Trevor:

1.    Mister Pollard – Michael Lauer; Luis Quinonez; 6-1

2.    Smokin Doc – Mark Lee; Jose Medina; 30-1

3.    Time Iz Flyin – Allen Milligan; Bryan McNeil; 20-1

The Clever Trevor, named after the Oklahoma-bred millionaire who won the very first Oklahoma Derby in 1989, is the eighth of nine races on Friday night at Remington Park and is scheduled for a 10:16pm start time. The first race on the card is underway at 7pm. All times Central.
