CLASSY VETERAN STACHYS RALLIES FOR FIRST SCORE OF YEAR

OKLAHOMA CITY – Stachys, a hard-knocking 6-year-old gelding who regularly competes in stakes company, took advantage of an opportunity to run in a $39,284 allowance event on Friday at Remington Park. He also took advantage of a three-way battle for the lead by others that set up his closing move, rolling from the back in the final quarter-mile to win going away by 1-3/4 lengths.

Owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling of Elk River, Minn. and trained by Michael Biehler, Stachys was eight lengths behind the pace set by Tiz Tee Time with five furlongs to run. In the second turn, jockey Luis Quinonez let Stachys make his move but he had to find a seam to work through traffic at the furlong pole to have the chance to win.

In mid-stretch, Quinonez angled Stachys from behind the frontrunners and managed to get through a small opening to find clear sailing. Once uncovered, he was able to stretch out and get by Imahit who had battled for the front, pressuring Tiz Tee Time from the start of the race. Moonshine Mullin followed Stachys in the stretch and managed third, 2-1/2 lengths behind the winner.

Stachys covered the 1 mile-70 yard race in 1:42 over a fast track at odds of 7-2, paying $9 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Imahit, the beaten 6/5 favorite, returned $3 to place and $2.20 to show. Moonshine Mullin paid $2.20 to show.

A Kentucky-bred gelding by Candy Ride (Arg) from the Wekiva Springs mare Wekiva Mist, Stachys won his 10th career race from 34 starts and his third at Remington Park. The winner’s share of $22,029 moves the lifetime bankroll for Stachys to $542,256.

The 25th Anniversary Season continues Saturday, Nov. 16 at Remington Park with the first race at 7pm.
