BLACK BEAR IMPRESSES, BIRZER RIDES THREE WINNERS
OKLAHOMA CITY – Black Bear, a speedy 3-year-old, returned to Remington Park action on Wednesday night after a recent loss in New Mexico. A $40,000 allowance for 3-year-olds and older at 6-1/2 furlongs was the setting as Black Bear found his winning stride once again, staying undefeated in two attempts in Oklahoma City.
Owned by Black Hawk Stable of Elk City, Okla. and trained by Chris Hartman, Black Bear was ridden with confidence by Ken Tohill who utilized a different pace tactic with the colt. In his five prior victories, Black Bear was first away from the starting gate and never caught, usually scoring by wide margins. Wednesday night, Black Bear sat off the pace for most of the first quarter-mile, not using a lot of energy early in the race.
Black Bear advanced along the rail to gain the lead with a little more than a half-mile remaining, then opened up under slight encouragement to put the field away after posting quick fractions of :21.56 for the opening quarter-mile and :44.11 for the half-mile. Black Bear crossed the finish in 1:15.56, in hand for the final yards, winning by 3-1/4 lengths.
The heavy wagering favorite at 1-5 odds, Black Bear paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Flat Black was second and paid $5 to place and $3.40 to show. Credit Report was third to pay $3.20 to show.
The win was the sixth from eight career starts for Black Bear, a Kentucky-bred colt by Midnight Lute from the Cape Canaveral mare Angel Trumpet. The winner’s share of $23,946 moves his overall earnings to $164,503.
Black Bear had won three straight races before finishing second as the 1-5 favorite in an allowance at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M. in late September.
Jockey Alex Birzer moved into third place in the rider standings with a natural hat trick, riding three winners in consecutive races. Birzer won with Hot Lap ($5 to win) in the sixth race; One Hot Gator ($2.80) in the seventh race; and Motion In Potion ($5.60) in the eighth.
The triple gives Birzer 42 wins for the season, putting him two behind standings leader Luis Quinonez (45) and on back of second-place Cliff Berry (43).
The 25th Anniversary Season continues Thursday thru Saturday, Nov. 7-9 at Remington Park with the first race nightly at 7pm. The $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes, named after the Oklahoma-bred millionaire who won the very first Oklahoma Derby in 1989, is the feature event of the week on Friday night. The Clever Trevor is the second-leg of the Remington Park 2-year-old Triple Series which culminates with the $250,000 Springboard Mile on Dec. 15.
Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park also features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor.
