Stanwyck holds off Centring to upset Turnback the Alarm

By Jon Forbes

ELMONT, N.Y. - Stanwyck put away Fantasy of Flight and held off even-money favorite Centring to register a 21-1 upset in the Grade 3, $200,000 Turnback the Alarm Handicap for fillies and mares on Saturday at Belmont Park.

The 1 1/16-mile Turnback the Alarm was the first stakes victory for Stanwyck, a 4-year-old homebred half-sister to 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo and 2007 Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and Grade 1 Goodwood victor Tiago.

Stanwyck raced in fifth as Fantasy of Flight set fractions of 23.67 seconds for a quarter-mile and 46.81 for the half before she began her rally nearing the quarter-pole. After taking the lead a furlong from the finish, Stanwyck was challenged by Centring but refused to yield, digging in to win by a head under Alex Solis. It was 4 ¼ lengths back to third-place finisher Fantasy of Flight, who finished a half-length in front of Royal Lahaina.

"I had a beautiful trip," said Solis. "I saved ground and got a good position down on the inside. I just had to be patient. At the three-sixteenths pole I got out in the clear and she went by the other filly and had to wait a little bit. She picked it up and finished strong to fight the other filly down the stretch."

Stanwyck completed the distance in 1:42.62 and returned $44.80 for a $2 win wager.

Prior to the Turnback the Alarm, Stanwyck had made only one start on the dirt, a maiden win at Santa Anita in October 2012. Since then, she was third in an optional claimer over Betfair Hollywood Park's Cushion Track in November and finished no better than fourth in three starts on the grass. Two of those races were in optional claimers in New York: a fourth-place finish in June at Belmont and a fifth on July 31 at Saratoga Race Course.

"This filly has trained so well in the morning," said John Shirreffs, who trains Stanwyck for Jerry and Ann Moss. "She just hadn't done it in the afternoon, but she trained like a graded stakes horse in the morning. We just had to transfer that form to the afternoon."

Stanwyck improved her record to 3-1-3 in 10 starts and has earned $222,650, including $120,000 for her Turnback the Alarm victory.

Lady Cohiba, Moon Philly, Street Secret, and Roman Invader completed the order of finish.
