HEATOFTHESTORM SAVES RUN FOR LANE, GAINS FIRST WIN OF 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY – Heatofthestorm had put together a solid racing year, finishing in the top three in six of his seven attempts. However, coming into a $36,750 Wednesday allowance for Oklahoma-breds, she had yet to visit the winner’s circle.
Jockey Luis Quinonez handled Heatofthestorm well in the 7-1/2 furlong race over the firm turf, allowing her to battle for the lead with two other rivals going to the backstretch. Along the backstretch, Quinonez managed to get Heatofthestorm to relax, letting Ridgeofstone take the advantage. The breather into the far turn made the difference for Heatofthestorm. She left the turn with some run remaining, taking the lead away from Ridgeofstone at the top of the stretch then holding off the rally by Classycountrygirl to score by a length.
Heatofthestorm crossed the finish in 1:31.24 over the firm going. Away as the even-money wagering favorite, Heatofthestorm paid $4.20 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.40 to show. Classycountrygirl paid $5.40 to place and $4 to show. Ridgeofstone held on for third after fading from the lead to pay $3.20 to show.
The win is the second from 15 career attempts for Heatofthestorm, both of which have taken place at Remington Park. The Oklahoma-bred filly by Latent Heat from the Summer Squall mare is owned by the Springfield, Colo. partnership of Larry Porter, Lysle Davidson and William Sparks. She is trained by Donnie Von Hemel.
Trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Ramon Vazquez teamed up for three wins on the Wednesday program. They won the opener with Awesome Allison ($5.60 to win), Calico Print ($7) in the fourth race and Ask Charlie ($5) in the fifth race. The training triple gives Asmussen, the leader in the conditioning standings, 23 wins for the season. The hat trick for Vazquez gives him 24 victories for the season, moving him within five of Quinonez who leads with 29.
Remington Park’s 25th Anniversary Season continues Thursday thru Saturday, Oct. 10-12 with the first race nightly at 7pm. The $1,000,000 Oklahoma Classics night of racing is fast approaching as the program of divisional stakes racing for Oklahoma-breds falls on Friday, Oct. 18.
