HANG COOL IMPRESSES IN DEBUT AGAINST WINNERS
OKLAHOMA CITY – Normally, first-time starters face off against other maidens, similar foes searching for their initial career victory. Hang Cool may not be the norm as he started his career on Wednesday night at Remington Park against others who had won a race, and defeated them easily.
Owned and bred in Texas by Tom Durant of Grapevine, Texas and trained by Jack Bruner, 3-year-old Hang Cool competed in a $30,000 allowance event at 6-1/2 furlongs against competitors ranging in age from 3 to 5 years-old. His rivals all had at least one career victory. There was also one foe with a pair of wins and two others who had already posted three wins.
Ridden by Lindey Wade, Hang Cool swept to the lead by the top of the stretch, drawing off to win by an easy five lengths. Allowed to gallop out the final yards to the finish, Hang Cool posted a final time of 1:14.81 over the fast main track, just two-fifths of a second off the 6-1/2 furlong track record set by Kangaroo King in 1997.
Part of a coupled wagering entry with Green Juice, also owned by Durant and trained by Bruner, Hang Cool was the 6-5 betting favorite and paid $4.40 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. A. P. Corsair set the pace but was passed by the winner in the stretch and settled for second, returning $15 to place and $6.80 to show. Bad Boy Charlie was third and paid $4 to show.
Hang Cool is by Touch Tone from the Foxhound mare Foxy Jill. His career debut earned him $17,847.
Jockey Luis Quinonez posted two wins Wednesday with All About Brownie ($9.20) in the fourth race and Louies Flower ($9.40) in the seventh. The double moves him to 40 wins for the season and sole possession atop the hotly contested jockey standings. Ramon Vazquez won two races to move into a second-place tie with Alex Birzer, each rider has 38 victories. Cliff Berry is in fourth position with 36 wins.
Remington Park racing continues Thursday thru Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The first race on Thursday and Friday is 7pm. A special afternoon program on Saturday starts at 1:30pm with Remington Park live racing alternating with the Breeders’ Cup World Championship stakes races, simulcast from Santa Anita Park in southern California.
Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park also features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor.
