BUSTER FRENCH AND VERENDUS SHARE WEDNESDAY FEATURE WIN WITH DEAD-HEAT
OKLAHOMA CITY – A dozen Oklahoma-bred allowance runners seeking their second career victories battled in Wednesday’s $36,750 feature at Remington Park. After one-mile of action, a pair of stable mates hit the finish line together.
Buster French and Verendus, both trained by Donnie Von Hemel, dead-heated for victory while reaching the finish line with different styles. Buster French went to the front immediately at the start and led throughout the mile. In the meantime, Verendus stalked the pace, as much as three lengths behind the leader coming off the final turn, before beginning his advance in the stretch. Buster French held on until the final stride when Verendus had methodically made up the ground to reach the line at the same time, as revealed by the photo-finish image.
Owned by French Partners of McAlester, Okla. and ridden by Shane Laviolette, Buster French won his second consecutive race at Remington Park. He is a 3-year-old colt by Any Given Saturday from the Vindication mare Constance.
Verendus is owned by Robert Zoellner of Tulsa, Okla. and was ridden by Luis Quinonez. He is a 3-year-old colt by Awesome Again from the Bridonthewire mare Zip To The Wire.
Both colts earned $14,462 for their dead-heat wins.
Away at 8-1 odds in the wagering, Buster French paid $7.40 to win, $6.80 to place and $4.60 to show. Verendus was the 2-1 wagering favorite and paid $3.60 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Somthin Country was 1-1/4 lengths behind the winners and paid $3 to show.
Remington Park’s 25th Anniversary Season of Thoroughbred racing continues Thursday thru Saturday, Oct. 17-19, with the first race at 7pm nightly. The 21st Oklahoma Classics, a divisional stakes series worth more than $1 million in purses, is the headline event this week on Friday night.

Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the $250,000 Springboard Mile for 2-year-olds, to be run on December 15, 2013.
