Vosburgh Invitational (G1) Quotes

Jack Sisterson, assistant to winning trainer Doug O'Neill of Private Zone (No. 8): "This horse has a tendency to [wait on the lead], and it's a credit to Martin Pedroza for knowing the horse. Just the way he was traveling, it looked like he could have opened up because he had a lot of horse. As you can see, Justin Phillip came and headed him and then passed him, and he dug down deep and got the win."

"I was wondering [about the inquiry]. Obviously, watching it live I didn't see anything and Martin didn't mention anything coming back. I didn't think that anything was too dramatic to take the horse down."

"When he broke out of the gate, I liked the way Martin took him over and got him to the inside. This horse has got natural speed. I wasn't too worried about the fractions. I know he can keep that speed over the six furlongs."

"We always thought highly of the horse. It's always tough shipping in to Belmont to win an allowance race, never mind a Grade 1. All the credit to [trainer] Doug [O'Neill] and the team back home for getting this horse ready."

Martin Pedroza, winning jockey aboard Private Zone (No. 8): "I got off to a good clean start, and that's what I was concerned about. He's very fast and we just waited for the competition. When I let him run, he gave me everything he had."

Toby Sheets, assistant to Steve Asmussen, trainer of runner-up and beaten favorite Justin Phillip (No. 2): "He ran a bang-up race, just got knocked off balance a little bit and kind of lost his momentum. The stewards didn't think it was that big of a deal. We lost by a head. I disagree."

John Velazquez, jockey aboard runner-up and beaten favorite Justin Phillip (No. 2): "I think it was enough to beat me by a head. When he touched my horse the first time, he lost his balance. The second time, he knocked him completely off balance to beat me by a head. Otherwise, I thought he ran a great race."

Note: This was Martin Pedroza's first ride at Belmont Park since finishing second in the 1991 Matron aboard Miss Iron Smoke.
