LAST TO FIRST RUN THROUGH TRAFFIC WORKS FOR STEELMAN RUN

OKLAHOMA CITY – With a quarter-mile left in a $33,000 allowance feature over the turf, Steelman Run was last in a field of nine. The 3-year-old was already underway with a winning move that would get him up to win by a nose.

Under jockey Glenn Corbett, Steelman Run was full of run in the final turn, going along the railing. The challenge was how the gelding, trained by Kelly Von Hemel, was going to find his way to the lead. Once straightened away early in the lane, Corbett angled Steelman Run off the rail and into traffic, attempting to find a path. The rider quickly had to alter course back toward the inside and eventually found space to exploit, getting back to the inner railing and on to victory.

Splendiferous had made a nice run off the final turn to collar the pace-setting leader Congenial in the final furlong. However, he did not have enough to hold off the hard charge of Steelman Run, settling for second.

Owned by Dream Walkin Farms of Norman, Okla., Steelman Run covered 7-1/2 furlongs over firm turf in 1:27.65. Away at 7-2 odds, he paid $9.40 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.60 to show. Splendiferous, the 2-1 wagering favorite, returned $3.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Congenial held third and paid $3 to show.

Steelman Run competed in the 2012 Springboard Mile at Remington Park, finishing ninth in the Remington Park’s top stakes event for 2-year-olds. The Springboard produced runner-up Will Take Charge, who has since won the $1 million Travers Stakes and the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby in consecutive fashion. Will Take Charge is now on his way to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park in southern California on Nov. 2.

Steelman Run is a Kentucky-bred by Kitalpha from the Zilzal mare Charmer Venture (GB). He has won three races from seven attempts, two at Remington Park, and Friday’s win worth $19,596 boosts his career money to $51,738.

Jockey Alex Birzer won one race on Friday with Honey’s Ryan ($5.20) in race three. The win gives Birzer 23 wins for the season and puts him in the jockey standings lead by one victory over Cliff Berry and Luis Quinonez.

Remington Park racing continues Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 & 29. The first race is at 7pm on Saturday with a special Sunday afternoon program on tap for the Oklahoma Derby car starting at 1:30pm.
