GUNSMOKE N RALLYS FOR SECOND WIN OF SEASON
OKLAHOMA CITY – Owner, trainer and breeder Roger Neff of Jones, Okla. has Gunsmoke N on top of his game right now. The gelding rallied from just off the pace to handle a move up in class, defeating Oklahoma-bred allowance rivals Saturday at Remington Park.
Gunsmoke N started his local season with a win against Oklahoma-bred claiming company at the end of August, drawing away then to score by three lengths. Saturday night, the margin was not as large at just 1-1/4 lengths. However, the victory came away from the claiming ranks and for more money as the purse for the event was $36,750.
Jockey Alex Birzer kept Gunsmoke N in a good position moving up the backstretch of the seven-furlong sprint. Midway through the lone turn, Birzer asked Gunsmoke N for run and he easily moved three-wide into the stretch and by the pace battle of Wister and Magic Empire. Taking the lead with a furlong to go, Gunsmoke N held off a rally by Verendus to cross the finish in 1:23.25 over the fast track.
At 7-1 odds in the wagering, Gunsmoke N paid $17.80 to win, $7 to place and $4.60 to show. Verendus paid $3.40 to place and $2.80 to show. Magic Empire faded to third and paid $5 to show. Lookslikeahit was the beaten even-money wagering favorite, finishing fourth.
A son of Scottish Halo from the Welcome Suitor mare Jessicas Answer, Gunsmoke N picked up his third career win, all of them at Remington Park. The winner’s check of $21,222 moves Gunsmoke N to $51,950 overall.
