GLINDA THE GOOD CONTROLS FEATURE, QUINONEZ WINS 4 TO TIGHTEN JOCKEY RACE
OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park leading trainer Steve Asmussen sent Glinda The Good to Oklahoma City for her return to racing on Thursday in a $40,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares. The 3-year-old filly showed her talent by setting a soft pace, taking a breather for nearly a quarter-mile while giving up the lead, then firing with a winning run to score by three-quarters of a length.
On vacation since a fifth-place effort in the Grade 2, $300,000 Black Eyed Susan Stakes the day before the Preakness at Pimlico in May, Glinda The Good utilized Thursday’s race to get back into action. The plan came together well as she showed confidence and class in winning her comeback for owner Stonestreet Stables of Geyserville, Calif.
Ridden by Luis Quinonez, Glinda The Good led the field of seven until midway through the second turn of the mile race. At that point, she allowed Lookinforchange to move by her and build a one-length lead with a furlong to go. Quinonez angled Glinda The Good off the rail and into the clear outside of Lookinforchange, where she propelled to the front and victory in 1:39.58 over the fast track. Lookinforchange held second with World Cup gaining third, five lengths behind the runner-up.
The heavy 1-2 wagering favorite, Glinda The Good paid $3 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.20 to show. Lookinforchange paid $4 to place and $3.20 to show. World Cup returned $7.40 to show.
A winner of four races from 10 career starts, Glinda The Good impressed in her Remington Park debut while picking up a winner’s check of $23,898. The Kentucky-bred filly by Hard Spun from the Miswaki mare Magical Flash has now earned $224,718 overall.
The win on Glinda The Good was the fourth of the night for both Asmussen and Quinonez as they teamed for the quadruple together. The tandem also won with Sheza Roman Ruler ($15 to win) in race two, Wagson ($7.60) in race five and Stereo In Motion ($11.80) in race six.
Asmussen now has 47 wins for the season, 22 ahead of Chris Hartman and Donnie Von Hemel in the trainer standings as he will win his ninth Remington Park trainer title.
Quinonez has now made a race of it in the rider standings as he tries to keep Cliff Berry from winning his 15th leading jockey title at Remington Park. The four wins on Thursday gives Quinonez 65 for the season, just three behind Berry at the top with three race dates remaining.
