COYOTE LEGEND WINS THRILLING THREE-HORSE PHOTO FRIDAY NIGHT

OKLAHOMA CITY – A $40,000 allowance race Friday pitted seven who usually compete in stakes races, going 1 mile-70 yards. Coyote Legend had an awkward start, getting away a step slower than his rivals but he quickly overcame the issue to go to the lead for good, despite having to win a three-way photo-finish for victory.

Owned by Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. of Midland, Texas and trained by Bret Calhoun, Coyote Legend was ridden by Cliff Berry who got the 5-year-old gelding to the lead before they reached the clubhouse turn. From there, Berry and Coyote Legend dictated the pace and at times opened his lead to as much as two lengths.

In the stretch, Coyote Legend looked like he would draw clear but he soon had company to his outside as Herp and Don Dulce were flying at the leader. In the final strides, Coyote Legend dug in and managed to edge Herp by a nose with Don Dulce in third by another nose. Another stride later, the results could very well have been different but as it was, Coyote Legend stopped the clock in 1:42.62 over the fast track.

The 6-5 wagering favorite, Coyote Legend paid $4.60 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.20 to show. Herp paid $4 to place and $2.80 to show. Don Dulce paid $2.40 to show.

The win was the 15th from 29 lifetime starts for Coyote Legend, a Texas-bred son of Gold Legend from the Seeking The Gold mare Coyote Café. The score was his fourth win at Remington Park and he made $23,898 for the effort to run his overall total to $610,979.

Berry would also win aboard Fulminator ($15.80 to win) in the ninth and final race on the card. The riding double helped give him some breathing room at the top of the jockey standings as his 70 wins is five clear of Luis Quinonez in second place. Berry is attempting to win his 15th Pat Steinberg Award at Remington Park, denoting the Thoroughbred Season leading jockey.

The 2012 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season is down to just two race cards on Saturday and Sunday. The first race is 6:30pm Saturday with a special afternoon program at 1:30pm on Sunday, Dec. 9. The $300,000 Springboard Mile, the richest 2-year-old race of the season, headlines the final program for 2012 on Sunday.

Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby, to be run for the 25th time on September 29, 2013.
