FREE STAR GUITAR POSTERS, SCHOLARSHIP GIVEAWAYS

SWEETEN LOUISIANA CHAMPIONS DAY

·        Louisiana-bred Legend to Parade Before LCD Classic

·        Benoit, Stall to Sign Autographs for Horse Rescue Donations

·        $1,000 Scholarship Giveaways for College Students

NEW ORLEANS (Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012) – Louisiana Champions Day Presented by Acadian Ambulance, annually the biggest day of racing for Louisiana-bred horses, will be even sweeter at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots this year on Dec. 8, as the first 5,000 guests will receive a free poster celebrating recently retired local legend Star Guitar, the all-time Louisiana-bred earnings leader and a record five-time Louisiana Champions Day winner. Also that day, college students will be eligible to win one of two $1,000 scholarships courtesy of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Star Guitar will be paraded in the paddock and in front of the Grandstand prior to the featured $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic, a race he won three times, from 2009 to 2011. He also won Champions Day races in 2007 (LCD Juvenile) and 2008 (LCD Sprint). Overall Star Guitar won 24 of 30 starts and earned $1,749,862. He eclipsed the previous Louisiana-bred earnings mark, held by Grade I winner Happy Ticket, by winning March’s Costa Rising Stakes, his 10th win at Fair Grounds from 12 starts (the two losses came in the 2009 and 2010 runnings of the Grade II New Orleans Handicap).

Owner Evelyn Benoit of Brittlyn Stable and trainer Al Stall Jr. will autograph Star Guitar posters on the Clubhouse side of the paddock from 1-1:30 p.m. in exchange for donations to the Louisiana Horse Rescue Association.

The scholarship drawings are open to any full-time students enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning. Eligible guests may enter the drawing inside the Grandstand’s first-floor entrances, east and west sides, up until gates open for the day’s first race at 12:10 p.m. Drawings will be held between races.

Fair Grounds and the LTBA will raffle off four more $1,000 scholarships during the first Starlight Racing night of the season on Dec. 28.

The 22nd annual Louisiana Champions Day consists of 11 stakes restricted to horses bred in the Bayou State, cumulatively worth $1.1 million.
