KING HENNY WINS BIG STRETCH BATTLE TO TAKE CLEVER TREVOR

OKLAHOMA CITY – The $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes proved thrilling late in the stretch with five runners within three lengths of each other. King Henny came out in the race for 2-year-olds on top by a head over Backstreet Hero.

Owned by the Laredo, Texas partnership of Erv Woolsey and Keith Asmussen, King Henny is trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden from his outside number-nine post position by Jamie Theriot. Away well from the starting gate, King Henny was forwardly placed, chasing the 6-5 wagering favorite The Drifter in the first quarter-mile.

As the field moved up the backstretch, The Drifter bobbled with five furlongs to go. Cliff Berry quickly veered The Drifter to the outside rail where he began to pull him up, his race finished.

At that point King Henny inherited the lead but would have to battle with others before getting clear in the stretch. Coming off the lone turn, Detention to the inside and then Holiday Mischief to the outside would challenge King Henny who showed great resolve to win and amend a rider miscue.

“He has very tactical speed, put me in a garden spot and came home strong,” Theriot said. “He’s lacking in experience and was lugging in a little bit but he was full of run and kept digging in down the lane. I lost my stick at the eighth-pole and it came close at the wire, he hung on.”

King Henny put away his early rivals then held on to cross the finish a head in front of the hard-charging Backstreet Hero, winning in 1:23.97 over the fast track. Best of Birdstone was a neck behind the top pair in third.

At 3-1 in the wagering, King Henny paid $8.60 to win, $4.80 to place and $3.20 to show. Backstreet Hero pair $9.60 to place and $4.40 to show. Best of Birdstone paid $2.80 to show.

A colt by Henny Hughes from the Afternoon Deelites mare Queens Carousel, King Henny won his second career race and his Remington Park debut. The first-place check of $60,000 for the Clever Trevor Stakes boosts the earnings for his three-race career to $91,000. King Henny was bred in Kentucky.

The Clever Trevor Stakes, named after the Oklahoma-bred who won the first Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in 1989 and would go on to be a millionaire, is the second leg of the local 2-year-old stakes series. The $300,000 Springboard Mile will put a cap on the series of races on the final day of the season, Dec. 9.

The Thoroughbred season continues Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6:30pm.
