JOHNNY WHIP WINS SATURDAY FEATURE AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – A field of six Oklahoma-breds battled in Saturday’s $21,400 Starter Allowance/$15,000 Optional Claiming event at Remington Park. Johnny Whip returned to state-bred competition after a poor performance last month in open company. The move was fruitful, producing a three-quarter length win after a stretch battle with Highway Fiftyfour.
Owned by George Straw of Whiteboro, Texas and trained by Jody Pruitt, Johnny Whip was ridden by Curtis Kimes. The 3-year-old gelding sat just off the pace set by Highway Fiftyfour before hooking the leader at the top of the stretch. The pair moved together into the final furlong before Johnny Whip edged to the front and eventually won in 1:10.46 over the fast track. Highway Fiftyfour held second with Hollywood Ice another half-length back in third.
The wagering favorite at 9-5 odds, Johnny Whip paid $5.60 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.20 to show. Highway Fiftyfour returned $6.80 to place and $3.20 to show. Hollywood Ice paid $2.20 to show.
The win was the fourth from a dozen career starts for Johnny Whip and it was his second at Remington Park. The gelding is by Stephen Got Even from the Seeking the Gold mare Paradisa. Johnny Whip made $12,399 for the victory to move his overall earnings to $79,774.
