THE ROAN RANGER BATTLES FOR LOCAL DEBUT WIN, BERRY MARCH TO 4,000 CONTINUES

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Roan Ranger made his Remington Park debut in Wednesday’s $30,000 allowance/optional claiming event, handling the one-mile test to wear down rivals in the stretch for victory. Jockey Cliff Berry was up to gain his second win of the night and move closer to 4,000 career Thoroughbred wins.

Owned by Lucky Dog Stables of Hot Springs, Ark. and trained by Cody Autrey, The Roan Ranger stalked the pace-setting Puckster through the first six furlongs of the race. Leaving the final turn, the 3-year-old colt was asked for his run by Berry and he methodically wore down Puckster to gain the lead in the final yards. He then fended off a late charge by Would You to prevail by three-quarters of a length in 1:38.05 over the fast track. Puckster tried to lead throughout and was a game third.

Away as the 6-5 wagering favorite, The Roan Ranger paid $4.60 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.80 to show. Would You paid $12 to place and $6.80 to show. Puckster paid $3.80 to show.

A Kentucky-bred by Exchange Rate from the Crafty Prospector mare Crafty Marian, The Roan Ranger won his fourth career race from a dozen starts and made $17,898 to move his career earnings to $106,368. The gray colt was entered into the race for the $20,000 claiming price and he was purchased out of the event by new owner Danny Caldwell of Poteau, Okla. and trainer Federico Villafranco.

The Roan Ranger provided Berry his second win on the Wednesday card. He now has 3,991 career Thoroughbred victories and is just nine away from the 4,000-win milestone. The Jones, Okla. resident will become the 65th jockey in racing history to reach the mark. He currently leads the Remington Park rider standings with 35 wins, four ahead of Luis Quinonez.

The 2012 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Thursday thru Saturday night with the first race at 6:30pm. The 20th Oklahoma Classics, featuring an entire 10-race program for eligible Oklahoma-breds in divisional stakes competition, takes place on Friday night. The total horsemen’s purses for the Classics are expected to reach $1,000,000.
