SMACK RIDGE SCORES SECOND TURF VICTORY OF SEASON
OKLAHOMA CITY – After a disappointing turf attempt in late September, Smack Ridge bounced back with a much better effort Thursday night at Remington Park. Over the turf at 7-1/2 furlongs, Smack Ridge sat just off the pace in the $31,500 allowance feature and was full of run in the stretch to pull clear for a 2-1/4 length score. It was his second triumph over the lawn this meeting.
Owned by Dream Walkin Farms in Norman, Okla. and trained by Don Von Hemel, Smack Ridge was handled by Shane Laviolette. The 4-year-old gelding won over the turf at 7-1/2 furlongs in late August, going to the front and prevailing by eight lengths. Thursday night, Laviolette had him relaxed in second behind the pace-setting Louie The Lip until leaving the final turn. Smack Ridge took over coming into the stretch and pulled away, crossing the finish in 1:30.77 over the firm course.
The heavy wagering favorite at 4-5 odds, Smack Ridge paid $3.60 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.60 to show. My Silver Bear rallied for second to pay $4 to place and $3.80 to show. Louis The Lip faded to third, paying $6.80 to show.
Smack Ridge is a Kentucky-bred by Cactus Ridge from the Victory Gallop mare Smack Madam. He has now won four career races from 12 starts with three of the wins at Remington Park. The winner’s share Thursday was $18,798, pushing his overall earnings to $85,292.
Jockey Cliff Berry won the first race of the evening aboard Texas Bling ($8.80 to win). The victory placed him into a tie for first in the jockey standings with Luis Quinonez as both have 31 wins for the season.
Berry’s win also moved him within 13 of his 4,000th career Thoroughbred victory.
The 2012 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Friday and Saturday nights with the first race nightly at 6:30pm.
