RED LEAD WELL OFF VACATION, SCORES TURF FEATURE

OKLAHOMA CITY – Red Lead, the third-place finisher in the 2009 Oklahoma Derby, returned to action off a three-month layoff to win Saturday’s $36,800 allowance/optional $62,500 claiming feature at Remington Park.

Owned by Joe Davis of Palestine, Texas and trained by Chris Hartman, Red Lead pressed the pace-setting Billy Two Hats until the pair reached the top of the stretch in the 1-1/16 miles turf event. At that point, jockey Chris Landeros had the 20-1 longshot rolling and he pulled clear to win by two lengths in 1:42.73 over the firm going. Billy Two Hats held second with Big Son of a Gun rallying for third, three-quarters of a length behind the runner-up.

Red Lead had been off since racing over a sloppy main track in the Brooks Fields Stakes at Canterbury Park in Minnesota in mid-June. The time away helped bring back his tough front-running style as he paid $42.60 to win, $13.80 to place and $7 to show. Billy Two Hats returned $8 to place and $5.40 to show. Big Son of a Gun paid $4.20 to show.

A Florida-bred gelding by Red Bullet from the Unaccounted For mare Upside, Red Lead won his ninth career race from 37 attempts while scoring his second Remington Park win. The first-place check of $21,825 moves his lifetime earnings to $627,630.

Remington Park leading jockey Cliff Berry had no wins on Saturday night so he remains six wins away from his milestone 4,000th career Thoroughbred win. Berry will become the 65th jockey in the history of the sport to achieve the mark.

The 2012 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Wednesday thru Saturday, Oct. 24-27, with the first race at 6:30pm.

Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park.
