APPRENTICE JOCKEY JORGE VARGAS, JR. NOTCHES
FIRST CAREER WIN AT SUFFOLK DOWNS
EAST BOSTON, MA - Apprentice jockey Jorge Vargas, Jr. recorded the first victory of his career when his mount Rockstar Cowboy won the fifth race at Suffolk Downs on Wednesday, October 17.
Trained by Robert Monahan II, the three-year-old son of Rockport Harbor broke sharply and contested the early lead before seizing command and holding on by half a length to break his maiden in the six furlong sprint. Rockstar Cowboy returned $18.20, 6.60 and 3.60.
Vargas, Jr., an 18-year old native of Puerto Rico, began riding at Suffolk Downs in September. His father, Jorge Vargas, has had a long and successful career in New England, reaching the 3,000 win mark last year. The elder Vargas, who is currently seventh in the jockey standings, finished fourth in his son's maiden breaking triumph. Vargas has another son, Jorge Fuller Vargas, who also rides at Suffolk Downs.
"It feels good," said Vargas, Jr. "It's great to get to ride with my father."
His father was quick to add, "I just couldn't be prouder."
