VOSBURGH INVITATIONAL (G1) QUOTES
Michael Hushion, winning trainer of The Lumber Guy (No. 1a): “This is always a good time of year for 3-year-olds. They’ve gone through that maturing. I like 3-year-olds vs. older horses this time of year. I’ve been telling Barry for the past five weeks that he’s been working like the real deal. We know he’s got a good mile in him from the Jerome. Time will tell. I don’t think we’ll be doing any jumping to a mile and an eighth from here.”
On running in the Breeders’ Cup: “Why not? Our first thought would be Breeders’ Cup. We’ll talk it over with Barry and look over the competition.”
Hall of Famer John Velazquez, winning jockey aboard The Lumber Guy (No. 1a): “It was pretty simple. Mike [Hushion] told me ‘He’s quick, make sure you get him out of there running, and if he’s taking you, leave him alone.’ He thought he was going to finish for me, and he did.”
Barry Schwartz, winning owner of The Lumber Guy (No. 1a): “We really felt going in that we were going to win today. I just joked, ‘The only bad thing is that we’re not going to get 10, 12-1 on him.’ He had a month off on my farm after the Peter Pan because he was knocked out. Mike really took it easy getting him back, and he’s just come back better than ever.”
On running in the Breeders’ Cup: “It’s just a question of which one, the Sprint or the Mile. I’m kind of inclined to think he’s a miler.”
Todd Pletcher, trainer of runner-up Caixa Eletronica (No. 8): “Seems like speed has been holding up pretty well. We got some solid fractions, not quite as fast as we were hoping for, but I thought he ran his race.
On the possibility of a start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint: “That would be Mike’s [Repole] decision. He’s not Breeders’ Cup eligible, so I don’t know if he’d want to supplement him or not.”
Javier Castellano, rider aboard runner-up Caixa Eletronica (No. 8): “I love the horse. He’s always honest, always tries hard. He’s a pro. Every time he puts in a great effort.”
